Default 1999 Hertage Springer, buy or pass. Help

Ok, looking at buying my first Harley, and am absolutely in love with the Springers. Found one that I think is a SMOKIN deal for $9k firm. 24k mi. Small rust spot on swing arm, and slight chrome flaking near shift linkage. Problem is I know nothing about the 80" Evo motor. I've ridden an 88" back to back against a 96" an could really feel the difference. Should I wait, or jump on this thing and plan on motor upgrades later?

And what would it cost to ship a bike from Indiana to Denver?

That's a great looking bike. Price seems reasonable as well. The last years of the Evo they were considered bullet proof engines. I don't really know though about engine upgrades, aside from cams. I'm sure there is plenty, but parts are probably getting harder to find.

Shipping would probably be around $400-500.

Have you checked craigslist? I did some searching for Heritage Springers last night in Colorado Springs craigslist and there are several around close by, including your neck of the woods.

I just did a craigslist search for heritage springers in Denver and there is an 2000. a 2002 and an 2006 all in better condition than the one you posted a few bucks more but after shipping its easier to buy local.

I love my Springer, bought it new in 2002 and have sunk a ton of money into it, its a keeper. I also owned a 99 Heritage Softail Classic which had a Evo motor so I'm familiar with an EVO. The Laser Red Springer is a beautiful bike in a very cool color. That said, you will notice a lack of power in the EVO having ridden the Twin Cam motors and more vibration.

Yes, bullet proof as mentioned above. Find a nice cam, bump up the compression with some headwork and she'll run just fine.

The bike is 16 years old and looks pretty good with some cosmetic flaws which can be corrected or replaced. As you mentioned for the price it looks like a fair deal.

If you love the color and don't mind a little vibration and putting a few more bucks into it then buy it. If you can live without the color and still want a Heritage Springer look into getting a Twin Cam HS, just my opinion and a yes, I am a bit biased.

Good luck with your future purchase.

The other thing to consider is that if you live in Co the altitude will screw with a carbed evo. A newer fuel injected bike will be happier with altitude changes. Just something to think about.

The amount of surface corrosion and flaking chrome on the bike in Indiana might be an indication of it being used on salted roads

If you still want a similar style Springer, the Springer Classic is very similar to the Heritage Springer. No bags, single headlight, and black springer forks are the biggest differences.

If you find a Springer Classic from 2007, you're in there with a 96" engine and 6 speed transmission too. I believe that 2007 was the last year of the Springer Classic, with 2005 being the first year.
