Don't try to talk sense into him 01dyna...I'm guessing his foot dragging bad habit has been firmly established. 50 years at an average of 400 miles a year comes out to only 20K miles so he's/she's still new to riding.
Instead of suggesting a manual to help you work on your own bike, I'll offer you the suggestion of taking the MSF course.
Those are indeed infamous, terribly pathetic TORX bolts... as some other fella mentioned, you need to get a GOOD quality set of TORX sockets ,cheap ones will simply strip the bolt head, causing you headaches, despair and heavy alcohol drinking :-) ... why HD insists in using such failed design as TORX is beyond comprehension, they belong in the world of microelectronics and precision micro mechanics, not in big mechanical machines as a big twin, I just remove the TORX bolts and replace them with hex head / Allen bolts each time I find one on my scoot. problem solved.. I just recently had to remove the TPS sensor, the one installed on the left side of the air intake manifold, guess what?.. fvcking TORXs!!!.. to make matters worse, the inner bolt is unreachable (go take a look, is so deep inside no socket fits) .. luckily an Allen L shaped tool had enough bite to remove it..

I have to admit Dude, even this thread sounds out in left field. Having said that get a manual, it would really help you. No one should make fun of you though for asking a question no matter how bad or dumb it sounds. I'm sure Ill catch **** for this but again, I could give a *****. I still cant figure out why your having this problem though. It should really be a non issue.
A guy comes in here and asks a simple question and then gets ridiculed about his riding technique, probably by guys that actually took riding lessons at a stealership? Damnedest thing I've ever seen.
Not if your legs are so far behind you that they're hit by the bike when you take off. Most people's feet are on their pegs/boards just as they're taking off. Apparently, yours are dangling behind you?
Do you also dangle your feet before you come to a stop?
