Default Super Tuner/Dyno Advice

Just put a deposit down on a 2015 Softail Slim. Adding V&H Big Shots and Stage 1. Dealer was really pushing Super Tuner and Dyno. I'm wondering if they are necessary, or can I just get the download and skip the Dyno? Thanks

I didnt tune and had some rumbling during decel. Took it back twice and its much better, but some still there. Still no dyno. Other than that the bike runs real good. I think I will dyno it when I install cams and then it should get out the bubbling.

Skip the dealer download.
I have the same bike and pipes, get a V&H FuelPak3 and call it a day.
You won't be disappointed.
Whereabouts are you in Pittsburgh?

If you are adding V&H pipes to your new bike so people can hear you. I agree because I did the same thing. When you change the air cleaner, you will need to tune. If you are stopping there. You should look at the fp3 from V&H. It will be a dead on map with no decel popping and it will pull great all the way up !!! Also it will drop the temp of the bike and allow it to run cooler!!!! Its like getting the bike dynode with out some guy red lining you new bike 30 to 40 times!!!!!
If you are going to do stage two and more look at the power vision!!! just my 2cts.

I had my old bike dynode and it ran great. But with my new bike I didn't want it red lined 30 or 40 times so I went with a flash tuner. When I bought the bike I had the dealer put on V&H slip-ons, when I flashed it with the fp3 map I couldn't be happier with the way she ran.. One year later I bought V&H true duals so I took out the fp3 flashed it with the map for true duals and again the bike runs great. Hoping you the best with what ever you choose..... swifty

Jam you beat me to it....lol

The stock computer will auto-tune pretty well for a Stage One. It won't get rid of decel pop though, because getting rid of that is a matter of throwing the decel fuel mixture settings far enough off that the fuel mixture won't ignite.

I appreciate the replys guys. I'm in Elizabeth Twp., Jam. How about you? Forgive my ignorance, but if I go with the FP3, do I install it myself? I'm gonna jump online and check it out now. Thanks

From my understanding it is best to wait until after the first 1000 miles before doing a dojo tune. You can just get the race tuner and exhaust without the dyno

Yes, it's a plug-in module that attaches to your data port under the seat.
It's small enough that you can leave it attached if you want to do Auto-Tune runs - mine fit into the battery box.

I had originally gone the route you're thinking about...
Since I purchased my V&H pipes and S&S air cleaner from the dealer, they offered to install them for free.
A particularly good salesman talked me into also buying the SESPT and letting them do the Stage 1 tune.
I had even talked to the service manager beforehand about my concerns, specifically heat and decel pop - he assured me I had nothing to worry about.
Pfffft. It was awful.
Heat was off the charts, the decel pop was unbearable, and my fuel mileage even climbed by about 5MPG, meaning it was still way too lean.
"EPA regs" he claimed, "our hands are tied, there's nothing we can do"...
But for another $350 they would put it on the dyno and "fix it".
I asked if they wouldn't still be bound by EPA regs, and when pressed for an answer he finally admitted "well, uh, yeah."

I ran ViED's for about a year, which helped quite a bit but I was never too happy with the full-time piggy-back install.
So when the FP3 came out, I hung back and waited for the reviews.
Turned out to be one of those products where the reviews were overwhelmingly positive, so I jumped in.
the FP3 cured ALL of the problems I had with the dealer remap and more.
I can't even imagine this bike running any better than it does right now.
After all, V&H develops their maps with bikes using similar upgrades (pipes & A/C) and after time on a dyno.
So ... you get the benefits of the dyno, without submitting your bike to some tech (qualified or not) who will spend an afternoon redlining the **** out of it 40 or 50 times... and all for $350, as opposed to considerably more from the dealer - $400 or so for the SEPST plus dyno time...
And with the SEPST if you ever make any additional changes (depending on what they are), you'll have to take the bike back to the dealer for another dyno, whereas with the FP3, you can call V&H and they'll send another custom map directly to your smartphone.

I'm in Monroeville, not too far from you btw...

So now the big argument against dyno tuning is that they will be red lining your bike all day?........Just trying to stay current with all of the misconceptions that are being browbeaten into a newcomers head. Don't forget to tickle him with your Shotgun Shock pom poms, tell him he is using the wrong kind of oil and if he doesn't use the Scavenger he will have old corroded dirty oil running through the crankcase and ruin his bike. Have I left anything else out?

The trick is finding a -qualified- tech, which I find is not as easy as it seems...
I had my last bike in once to have the belt and rear sprocket changed out under warranty - seems they found a few chips/nicks during the 1K service.
Well, the dealer must have been busy that day and they threw the job to the "oil change boy" or at least somebody with questionable qualifications.

Needless to say, whoever did the job FUBAR'ed it so bad that an H-D Customer Rep got involved, and they ended up buying the bike back...

I'd think that a dyno is certainly one of those jobs where you don't want anyone doing it who doesn't know exactly what they're doing - and I'm willing to bet that happens more often than people realize.
