speed issues on a train
ORIGINAL: bak n blak
I figured the apes would have a little to do w/it, but my older bike (a custom w/apes) never had any of these problems. I'll do the checks on spokes/pressure when I get home next week. I appreciate the help!
hammer - I'm in Atlanta for the same reason so many people flood your city in the spring - I'm a golf professional. Weather, city, access to airport, etc brought me to Atlanta. You want to get some crazy looks - drive a loud, lowered train w/apes to the golf course in your golf clothes & shoes - I get some real "are you kidding me?" looks from people! I'll be looking for your train when I'm over that way!
Thanks for all the suggestions guys!

Why am I picturing plaid pants?
I think I'd rent a locker or pack a bag and a change of clothes.
Plaid pants -- that's great! No plaid here! I'm a basic khaki guy. Golf just pays the bills - I don't dress like that to hang out.
I like the Karate kid quote - that's pretty good. I like the apes - let's me sit back a little more than the drag bars that were on there when I bought it. Drove from Atl to FL yesterday and saw lot's of bikes on the way down - I was wishing I had mine w/me! I passed a lot of bikes w/apes going at least 80 - I couldn't hold on to mine at 80!
I'll check the above suggestions - and I'll stay away from the plaid pants!
thanks guys.

the apes on the train frame will have some effect on the handling. the front tire is also an issue on the n-t and the standard. replace it with a 90/90 Metzler and alot of your handling issues will go away.Just changed the spoke front wheel to a mag and the slow speed shimmy went away completelyI didn't like the feel of my neighbors standard with the 200 rear anddrag bars, not as stable to me as the 150 rear on my 05. I run my bike in the 80-90 range alot on the highway and have no handling problems. sweet spot is right at 83 mph that's just me though as some might feel it different. I'm from up the road in Flowery Branch.
Hey "Back Again" - I'm over in Alpharetta - right by Killer Creek HD. I was at Frazier's HD last Monday and a guy mentioned the same thing - he changed the front wheel to a mag and said he could lock the throttle and go no handed. I know the apes will limit some control, but it shouldn't make it as bad as it is. Sounds like I either change the front wheel, or deal w/it. I know there's lots of guys on here w/apes - but no control issues, so I guess the front wheel/ape combo is not a good one. For better stability, is it more important to go wider w/the tire and stay w/a 21" or to go to a smaller, wider wheel like a 16"? Does that question make sense? Could I go w/a 90/90 on my existing rim or will I need a new wheel.

I never really had a problem with the stock tire at freeway speeds. I'm more into just cruising these days so I really don't seem to notice any real difference except this tire doesn't seem to have any problems on bad roads..
I wanted to get away from the stock "rib" tread pattern in favor of something more solid. The one thing I have noticed is that this new tire is unaffected by grooved or wavy pavement.
Yeah, mine catches every crack in the road - never noticed how many grooved roads we had in GA!! So, if I'm correct, I should be able to put a 90/90 on my stock rim? Is that right, or will I need to replace the entire wheel?

My wheel is the same size as the stock HD spoke wheel 2.15 x 21".
The 90 x 90 is a better fit than what you have. You will not need to change your wheel..
Here are a couple more pics of the 90x90 so you can feel comfortable ordering one.
