Have you tried adjusting the stock shock at all? Mine was way to soft when I took delivery from the dealer, who made absolutely no effort to set it up specifically for me. I adjusted it to firm it up a little and it made a world of difference.
Upgrade the shocks then the seat.
Or if you want to make her happy do both.
It will come down to what you are after and how much you want to spend.
The seat upgrade will likely cost you between $4-600 depending on your selection.
There are too many options out there to suggest only one so you'll just have to do some research.
I have the Signature Series seat and both my Wife and I really like it.
As for shocks, IMO there's really only two options Shockgun Shock or Progressive 422 RAPs.
The Shotgun Shock will enhance the ride quality and allow you to slam the bike at will.
But they will set you back $1200 plus the installation isn't just a "plug and play" but for a normal wrencher it shouldn't be too hard.
The Progressive 422 RAPs will enhance the ride but will not allow for you to lower/slam your bike at will however they will allow you to lower it up to 2" when you do the install.
They will run you around $500+ and they install just like the stock shocks do.
I can't say which way is best for you but for me, I was able to get the Progressive 422 RAPs and the Signature Series seat for a lot less than $1000 so that's the way I went and the Wife and I are very pleased.
