OK without going into a long explanation - I have a high voltage problems. If you are knowledgeable and informed about the charging systems please take a look. I'm at a standstill. See the original thread. https://www.hdforums.com/forum/elect...and-b0563.html
Most likely the voltage regulator. The highest you should see is about 14.2/3 Pull the stator plug and check for current across the plug pins. If you're reading more than like .02-.03v the regulator is toast. Also look for any rub marks on the regulator wires. If there are any rub throughs the regulator is probably shorted out.
Just bought an 07 Heritage from my son I hadn't really had a chance to ride it until last weekend. I noticed when I hit 6th gear the indicator went on then off, then the engine light came on. I had changed the rocker box gasket because one was installed wrong and leaking, so I thought it might be low on oil. Not oil.
So I pulled the codes and got a P0563 and B0563 - Battery Voltage High & Battery Voltage High TSM.
I tested and found from 13.5/14V at Low Idle to 17+V when I ran the RPMs up. I read that could be caused by a bad battery or a failing voltage Regulator.
I had planned to get a battery anyway, so I did, and the problem remained. Ordered a Voltage Regulator from Harley, cleaned all terminals, installed the VR and made sure the ground was connected. Problem remains.
I did remove the tank to do the Rocker box, so tomorrow I will remove it again and check all the wiring, terminals, and any grounds under the tanK.
Any suggestion and am I missing something obvious.
Follow-up;
Removed the tank and found NO pinched or bare wiring.
Fully charged and load tested both batteries - BOTH Passed (GOOD).
Also checked wiring from Stator, no obvious wear or nicks.
When you say PINs on the VR, as in testing the diode for current backfeed?
My electrical manual for 09 Softail says overcharging is from a suspect regulator. They do have to be grounded well, do you have an ohm meter? One lead on the regulator fin and one to the frame.
Thank. I'm using a calibrated fluke 787. I just got back in.
I'm reading +- .02Vdc - .03Vdc pin to pin on the 3 pin stator side, Main fuse in and VR grounded.
Pins to ground 11.2 -11.3 Battery has 12.8V.
Got in after the OHM post - so I did nor check resistance between the fins and ground.
FYI the old regulator gives the same, except 11.4 pins to ground.
