Thanks, but I was hoping to get the actual HD bulletin, not the letter they send to customers.

Well if I read that letter correctly, every Softail built up to March 14, 2007, which surely includes my bike, is affected.

The dealer just called me back and said that they read the bulletin incorrectly. And they want the bike back tomorrow to install the parts.

Well, it's inconvenient, but I am glad it get done tomorrow.

That's odd, I KNOW that my bike was built WAY before March 14. Was probably made back in July of last year.
But the HD web site doesn't tell me that there is a recall on my serial number.
Think I'll give the dealer a shout in the AM and see if they know anything more.

I have an appointment to have mine done tomorrow. The service writer said not to ride it again until completed. I asked how I should get home and get the bike back to the dealer tomorrow. It hasn't burned up in 4300 miles so it'll probably last another 20 miles, I think I'll chance it.

Can someone post pics. I have 5100 miles and I see no signs of wear anywhere around the positive or negative battery leads.

I think it's sad that many Softail owners have had issues with this problem and it took the NHTSA to investigate and initiate a recall. If HD really cared about thier customers and the quality of thier product, they would have initiated the recall before the NHTSA forced them to do it. Thank Ralph Nader, he may have saved your life, 'cause HD doesn't seem to give a crap about it!!!

If I understand the history of this correctly HD notified the NHTSA about it BEFORE the government knew anything about it. They didn't force the motor company, the motor company just told themwhat the problem was and what theywere doing to fix it.
How else do you think the notice just came out of the NHTSA, but HD already had the 'fix' kits made up and on the way to the dealers.
You can't investigatea problem, figure out the fix, design and manufacture aretrofit kit all fromscratch and ship them out inside acouple of weeks.
Industry, I don't care which one, just can'tdo things that fast. Even if the government is breathing down their throat.

Just check the positive battery cable and terminal, if there is no sign of them getting abraded by the top edge of the oil tank with the mileage you have its 'probably' not going to be a true problem for you. But 'just in case' I would call the dealer and ask if your bikes serial number comes up as one of the suspect bikes.
Don't trust the HD web site, I looked mine up there and it doesn't say a thing about it, but other bikes made after mine are in the suspect lot. I was at the dealer today and asked them to look mine up in their system and it is supposed to get the kit installed.
The other thing you can do to make SURE you don't have a problem before you get the kit installed is to get a piece of wood or plastic and stick it between the battery and the front of the battery box to keep the battery from moving forward from vibration or brakeing forces. Preventing the battery from moving forwardis all that's needed tokeep the cables or terminal from contacting the tank and causing the problem.
