I am looking for detachable sides plates for a Heritage Classic ...Do I need to buy a new set of bags?? AllI wantto do is remove the passenger back rest for in town riding..
In a word... no. You do need to get the docking hardware which will sit your stock bags out about 3/4" more than they are now. Otherwise the factory bags will attach the same way they do now.
On my 06 the bags set out but the docking kit did nothing with the bottom brace of the bag. So essentially it did not work because the bottom brace was 3/4" out from the stud it bolts to, near the passenger foot peg. Not sure if 05 is the same way. I talked with dealer and they had no idea how to remedy this and refunded me for the plates and docking kit. If any one has the solution I am curious to hear it....

Solution to this is install the docking kit. Hang your bags on the bolts and start the nuts that hold the bags on. Put the bolt through the bottom bracket and start the cap nut. Tighten everything down. If you tighten the two nuts that hold the bag on before you put the bottom bolt though it may pull the bracket away - but there's enough flexibility in the bracket to just bolt it up.
I see.... so it kind of is hanging at an angle? Probably would never notice it. The dealership refunded me, and I will just leave it set up for 2 up riding I suppose. Thanks for the reply!

The HD solution is the saddlebag relocation kit. It contains new offset brackets (stamped steel) to replace the stock rubber core ones.
