Default removing cam cover

hello all, my 2000 heritage has just over 32000miles on her now. i want to check the cam chain tensioners before riding season. have been researching online and cant find an answer. i have seen many posts claiming to just pop off the cam cover, yet in my service manual shows a wire for the timing pickup?. do i need to be extra careful as to not mess up this wire when removing the cover? thanks, carl

No, just take the bolts out and use a soft mallet to knock the cover loose, then remove. You are going to need to remove the front head pipe and there will be a bit of oil that will run out of the case so have a pan under it...

Pay attention to your manual. I'm guessing it says how to deal with the Cam Position Sensor. I believe pre-2001 TC 88's with a carb had a Cam Position Sensor (CPS).

I've never worked on a bike with one, so I don't know how they attach or are removed, I just know they exist.

If your bike has one, you might have to remove the timing cover and sensor prior to removing the cam chest cover... but I don't know for sure one way or the other

NOTE: I just noticed the post above mine.... perhaps the cam chest cover just comes right off CPS and all, just use common sense and don't over stress the cam position sensor wire..
