Default Options for carrying tools on FXSTS

Hey folks..1st post here, and looks like a huge # of knowledgeable folks.. I am ordering the Windzone essential toolkit and want to carry on my Springer (FXSTS).. don't really want to install the teardrop tool carrier and don't have saddlebags.. Any options? Someone had mentioned that they had a softail w/ a fork bag down low on the downtubes, but seems that it would cover the voltage regulator..

Thx for the input in advance.. Wayne

Hi, I tried the bag covering/hanging close bythe regulator, with a small tool role on my dyna and it just scrapped the floor on the adverse cambers on roundabouts - so had to thnk again. Im resigned to spending still money buying a proper HD one - when funds permit......unless somebody else has a better idea.
Let me know how you get on eh?

You 'could' put the bag just above the regulator and in front of the oil lilter.
A small bagwouldshouldn'tobstruct theairflow to the cylinder fins or regulator.

Yeah.. I am thinking that direction also, but wonder then if I start getting in the way of the tire. I'm not in front of the bike, so need to look..

Thx.. Wayne

Wayne,
I just went to the garage and measured from the frame rails to the back of the fender is 6 1/2 to 7". But the bag I have on my risers is just a hair over 3" from front to back. So I don't think it would be much of a problem getting one inthere. My only real concern would be for when it rains. The front tire is bound to toss a ton of road spray at it. Maybe it would be better if you could look around for something like a small tin box, similar to an index card box.
Put some rubber around the lid edges to make it waterproof or just drill a hole in a low spot as a drain. Then getsome heavy duty paint (POR15, Line-X, or rubberized auto undercoating) and put everything inside it in zip lock bags.
THe box should be able totake a fair amount ofpounding from rocks the front tire is likely to toss its way and you could glue some rubber inner tube material to the front to absorb some impactd. While the zip lock bag's inside(with a lightly oiled rag in it) should be able to keep things inside relatively dry and rust free.

Good Luck

I built a hidden bracket to mount a fork bag on my STS. It mounts to the lower shock mount and works perfectly for packing locks and a few tools.

I thought about this as well. Couldn't come up with anything I liked. I created a tool-kit from scratch with key stuff I think I'll need and pack it in a small bag.

It stays at home unless I am going to a longer ride. If so, it'll go in saddlebags or T-bag. For short rides it's not worth the effort. I'm local and lots of places nearby if I have a problem.
