Default MT90 verses the MU85

I have an 02 Heritage Classic. It has the MT90 rear tire and I would like to install the MU85 (higher load rating). The tire is .310 inches wider. Otherwise, no difference in physical size. Anyone know if this would fit? Harley-Davidson went to this size beginning in the 03 model year.

I think the MU85 (140) is a bit taller as well. When I looked up tires for my '06 Deluxe, it called for the MU85. Currently it has a MT90 (130). Explains why the speedo reads a bit fast

Not sure why HD does not include the 02 model in the fitment.

According to Dunlap spec chart ( http://www.dunlopmotorcycletires.com/tire-line/d402/ ) the height difference is .01 inch. That should not be an issue. I mostly concerned with the .310 inch total width difference. Hoping it is not too wide. Really like the 81 lbs load specification difference. Like the contingency.

It'll fit. That's only about .155" (5/32") per side wider. I just put a 150/60-18 on my 02 Heritage two days ago. It's definitely tighter in the fender mainly around the bag studs but man it sure looks good. Mine is also lowered 2".

That explains why my speedometer reads a couple of miles optimistic... it came with a mU85 but had a MT90 when I got it. I've got about 10,000 miles on it but it's not done yet, can't complain about the mileage.

I know from extensive research on the quick release fender systems on 03 vs earlier bikes, the tightest spot is where the fender bolts are bolted on the inside of the fender. When the MOCO went with the wider tire in 03 they came with nut plates on the inside of the fender with the threads in the fender (which are removable) vs. regular nuts on the fender bolts. That provided add'l clearance for the slightly wider tire.

I know guys have run the 02 and earlier bolts on their 03's so I'm suggesting to you that you'll be fine. To verify, measure your clearance between your fender bolts and the tire and see if you'll have the .155 add'l clearance needed. With weight on the bike of course, you want to check clearance with full load, in fact, on the bump stops if you can arrange it.

Harley introduced the MU85(140) & 150 to the Softail line in 2003 (depending on sub-model and whitewall or not) ALONG with changing the offset in that rear wheel on both the laced spoke and Cast "Mag".

As previously said, a MU85 (140) should fit fine

Comparing the 85 to the 90 on J&P Cycles website the 85 is only $7 more but has 2/32 more tread. That alone is worth going with the 85 in my book.

Of course if you are really rich you can get the harley logo whitewalls, about $230 ($70 more) at Surdyke HD. They look great but not worth the $70, at least not on the back.

The tires on my bike are new whitewalls. We had a warranty issue with the rear tire. I will stay with the whitewall but I really want the extra load and tread groove depth. Thanks for the feedback.
