Default Intermittent Starting Problems

This problem is intermittent, don't know if anyone else has ever experienced. Turn ignition switch on, all lights work. Turn kill rocker switch on, Push start and nothing happens. Do this several times and nothing happens. Then all of a sudden, try once more and it starts. Frustration. Could it be ignition switch even though all power comes on? Could it be kill rocker or start rocker? How to diagnose? 2011 Heritage Softail Classic. Battery good, connections (that I can see) all look good. Any ideas?

It could be your main ignition switch. My bike did the same thing and it took me a while to figure out was was going on. The next time it won't crank, wiggle the main ignition switch left and right a little and try again. It may have become position sensitive. On mine the smallest change in position made the difference between cranking and not cranking. I changed the switch on mine and never had a problem again..

Thanks, I'll open it up and check the contacts. My concern was that it may also be one of the two rockers, kill or start rockers. The main switch sounds like the popular problem, so I'll start there. Thanks to everyone, will let you know what happens.

I wouldn't take it apart. They aren't very expensive so it's easier to replace it with a new one. But, try the wiggle test before you do anything or you may be wasting your time. There are one or two other things that can cause a similar problem, but the main switch is the most likely and easiest to take care of.

In the case of my switch, after I replaced it with a new one, I took the old one apart to diagnose it. On mine the problem was one of the electrical contacts had sunk into the plastic housing, so the slightest move of the switch made the contact finger ride up on the plastic edge next to the contact and break connection.
