Default 180 tire on an '89 Softail

Hi all,

I'm doing a ground-up build of an 89 Softail, and would like to use a pair of late wheels I found for a good price. They're spoke chrome wheels, and the rear is a 180 with a cush drive belt pulley.

I found a wide swingarm for pretty cheap that will take the larger wheel, but I'm not sure about what else I need to do to make this work. I've built bikes before but always stayed bone stock. This is new ground for me.

So, do I need to offset the primary and transmission, or can I get away with shifting the wheel over to compensate? It's just an empty frame right now so it wouldn't be a big deal to add the parts, but I'd like to keep it as simple as possible.

Thanks,
Nick

you would probably get more info in the evo section. I put a 170 on my 93 softail using a 1" belt an it was a tight fit. to use those wheels you will probably need fork lowers an a swing arm to match the axle size. Here's a pic of my 170 with the stock swing arm:

For the bike to handle it's best, the wheel needs to be centered in the frame...this will require a trans/primary offset. Mount wheel in center of frame...then use a straight edge to see how much offset you need.

Tom,

Those pictures are a huge help, thanks. I have the swingarm getting powdercoated now, and when I get it back I'll do this.

Thanks again,
Nick
