Default washable oil filters

I was wondering if you guys that have washable oil filters noticed any benefits from using them. I know about the whole 5 micon thing and the price thing. But I would like to hear from people that use them...
The reason I'm thinking about buying one is, every winter my bikes oil sumps into the crank and on first start up the oil light will stay on for a good 5 seconds or so until the pressure builds up to shut the switch and the light goes out. I know oil is flowing from the moment the bike starts. But I thought if these type filters give 7x the flow rate it could help? I posted this in the oil forum ,,, But I would like to hear from the softail group . Because its the softails that sump oil.... tia swifty

Default sumpn up

I use the K&P filter on three of my bikes and would use it on the fourth if they had one for a Panhead. My 11 Fatboy and 08 Crossbones both sump if left sitting for a few months and my 80 FXWG sumps if left a month. I think it's a good thing having these filters with less restriction to get the oil back to the tank ready for distribution where it belongs. I haven't noticed it taking longer for the oil light to go out but sense it only happens once or twice a year my brain might be foggy on the point. I'll be heading to my winter abode in AZ in a few weeks and will try and respond to this discussion after I start the Fatboy which I'm sure will be in the sump mode after sitting idle sense mid August. If you're looking to get one Hardy@broadspoke.net has treated me fairly.

When the bike sits for extended periods oil will push past the gerotor and collect in the crankcase sump. It's worse on a Softail because the oil tank is higher. Nothing to worry about as the oil will circulate back into the system after the engine is started. I rarely let mine sit long enough for this to happen

When mine is going to sit, I change the oil and put one quart in it. Its going to the crankcase anyway. When I am ready to start it I put the 2quart balance in the tank. Works for me. I dont see the advantage to the washable filter. JMHO

Thanks for the explanation. Sorry but don't know what a gerotor is? (edit looked it up its a gear pump) I did not notice this with mine. Started it after sitting in a cold garage for over 4 months and had no oil pressure light, seemed to start as always...

I have a K&P washable filter on my 2008 Heritage. Outside of the advertised benefits, which may or may not be accurate, I like being able to pull the filter mesh and inspect just what is being filtered out of my oil. Specifically, metal particles and other foreign material. I consider the ability to do this a form of early warning system. And although the filter is a little pricey up front, if you do the math, I've saved a lot of money on filters over the six or seven years I've had it on the bike. If I were the type that buys a new bike every few years, I probably wouldn't use one.

Swifty. Oil does slowly drain from the oil tank into the gear case on Softails. Some do it worse than others. My wife's oil level is always lower than mine after sitting awhile. The oil light goes out almost instantly on ours when started. If yours takes 5 seconds there might be something else going on.

I agree. I have a Flo stainless reusable filter and the ability to take it apart and see if any junk has been caught in the filter is a plus for me also.

I was looking at the K&P website. This thing is 3lbs and they claim you should torque it down to 18to24 ft lbs or factory specs which ever is less!!! Are you guys making them that tight or just hand tight like a normal filter???
