Default starter issue

i have had an intermittent issue and now it happens almost all the time. I have an 05 softail springer classic with the edelbrock rpm performance package and am having a hard time starting. It cranks very slow and will not start. I have had the battery load tested and its good. I have replaced both cables as well and cleaned the connections and still the same issue. It will crank about 1 rotation a second and its not enough to kick it over. Are there any other grounds I can check before pulling the starter.

side note, i believe the edelbrock kit ups the compression to about 10.5. The previous owner had it installed and im not sure if he also upgraded the starter to handle the new load.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

Are your compression releases functioning properly? If not, at 10.5:1 you will overwork starters pretty easily....

I'll have to check the compression releases, no idea how to do that but that's what google is for..lol. Same for the starter clutch. I'll check back in once I try those

Did they install manual compression releases? If they did you should be using them every time you start the bike. They are 2 buttons on the cylinders next to the spark plugs.

If they didn't... They should have. You are taxing your starter.

I don't see any compression releases near the spark plugs. Looking up symptoms for a bad starter clutch that doesn't sound like the issue either. I'll try to post a video soon.

Even though the battery passed load testing it might still have an issue. Also, what kind of battery is it. You may need a battery with more cold cranking amps.
