Default How to tell if starter solenoid is going bad.

On my 09 FLHTCU when starting up a cold engine, it sounds like my starter grabs the ring gear and starts to turn over then slips off and grinds. Then I hit the start button again and it will start up normal. I do have a new battery, check wires for proper adjustment and no corrosion. Could this be a sign that solenoid is going bad? or something else? Thanks for any help.

Sounds like a weak starter clutch.

I just replaced the compensator with BDL one and I was having the problem before and after the compensator upgrade. If it is the starter clutch, can it be repaired/rebuilt without replacing the complete starter?

Replace the starter clutch with an "All *****" starter clutch. Problem solved.

The starter clutch is replaceable, dealer part and not a big deal to do if that is what you decide. Sometimes running a battery that needed replacing a while ago will put excessive pressure on the starter, premature wear...

Dawg has posted a toyota part number for a starter clutch...about $35

IF you determine that is the problem

the HD solenoid is similar to that on a Chevy and easy to rebuild- if you have done a chevy, then do yours.

it needs full power- a duff battery or bad cables will contribute to damage in the solenoid

you can open and clean it- examine the contact disk for carbon and pitting

Check the wiring on the battery terms and all connections on the starter. Mine does that and when it does. It means my battery cables have vibrated loose.
