On my 09 FLHTCU when starting up a cold engine, it sounds like my starter grabs the ring gear and starts to turn over then slips off and grinds. Then I hit the start button again and it will start up normal. I do have a new battery, check wires for proper adjustment and no corrosion. Could this be a sign that solenoid is going bad? or something else? Thanks for any help.
I just replaced the compensator with BDL one and I was having the problem before and after the compensator upgrade. If it is the starter clutch, can it be repaired/rebuilt without replacing the complete starter?
The starter clutch is replaceable, dealer part and not a big deal to do if that is what you decide. Sometimes running a battery that needed replacing a while ago will put excessive pressure on the starter, premature wear...

Check the wiring on the battery terms and all connections on the starter. Mine does that and when it does. It means my battery cables have vibrated loose.
