I bought a 2001 softail heritage with only 1800 miles a month ago. Today is the first nice day since purchase so went to take a ride. Gas gauge shows about an 1/8 full so went to fill up. The stupid gas cap won't come off. I can turn it but it won't release. Do I have a problem or am I just stupid?
not sure about that type of cap.......but maybe put some DOWN pressure on it while turning?
Maybe some UP pressure?
Wonder if the top part of the cap came dislodged from the lower section......im sure someone around here will help you out.......they're good like that!
Which gas cap are you trying to remove? If you're trying to remove the left side with gas guage, then no that won't work. Remove the right side. Might be stuck from lack of use, give it a good twist counterclockwise when looking down on it.

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on your new to you bike!
Like b t said, loosen the one on the right, the one on the left is non-functional as a gas cap.
Sounds to me like you have a flush mount cap. Mine did this on my last bike. Anytime my gas got low, back pressure would make it impossible to move. First time it happened, I used something as a wedge to get it to break the seal. After that I just used my fingers. May need a new cap too.

By anytime, I mean it started doing it about a year after I installed it. Scared the heck out of me the first time because I had just enough gas to get home and no tools or idea what the problem was.
Sounds like it you can turn it that the top chrome piece has separated from the plastic threaded part. Get a new one, and a large pair of pump pliers. Squeeze the top and turn. You're going to screw it up, that's why I said get a new one.
