Cobra, Rinehart and V&H Big Radius 2-1s all fit, look and sound good but they all suck on the dyno...Road Rage, Fat Cat, V&H Pro Pipe...and the new shorty Pro Pipe...and Thunder Header...with a modified baffle...all look great, sound awsome AND perform!

hog-doc, interesting bottomline. Is there any place where there's data we can look at for these systems? Is most of it on touring models, or is there a good bit on the softail? Seems like I read somewhere that the 2 models were tuned differently by HD.

Hey folks, lets try Gordon61's recommendation and see what levels of sound we can record for the different systems!! We will need to have consistant locations and RPM levels so we can compare the systems. I don't think we can compensate for the tuning since it will vary. So lets have all measurements made at the end of the muffler, with 3 readings: 1 at idle, 1 at 2000 rpms and one at 3000 rpms. If you will post your data here, I'll put the table together and post for everyone. THANKS

I was watching a couple of youtube vids just the other day about some US state bylaws on sound ...they were measuring about 20" 45ş off straight back from the end

FWIW stood up, down low, to the side or straight infront ...unless you are up real close to the end of the pipe didn't seem to make much of a difference.

Tuning and timing I found made changes to the sound but but more tone than volume ...if that makes sense. The big factor, I'm guessing here, is the number of cubes pushing the air out.

Personally, I'm thinking the ProPipe I have is just a tad loud for me at 100dB ...the poor tourists in the middle of the city of Edinburgh having to put their hands over their ears is a touch embarrassing as well, lol
...if anyone has a Road Rage on a 103 I'd be interested in it's numbers, cheers

I suggest we measure the sound level at the end of the muffler, 90 degrees from the bike and 12" away.

I think you are overthinking your exhaust choice. Pick the one you think looks and sounds the best. If you are building out your motor, then you should start to get picky with what exhaust matches your build. But if you are doing just exhaust, AC, and tune, then just pick the one you like the best. You won't notice a hp/tq increase between any of them unless you see it on a dyno sheet and it bothers you. Sound wise well....there's stock, loud, and LOUD.

lol, not really helpful I'm afraid you can discuss that one with the boys when they pull you over

Decibels is an actual measurement that would be useful if we could get past the "but its a Harley" or "but I ride a bike" or "but car drivers can hear me coming" hey ho, whatever. It's also the one that determines if you get a ticket or not, lol

lol. A few of my friends are officers here in San Diego and they don't carry a Db meter. They don't stop you for your loud exhaust....they stop you if you drive like ****. But hey, if you are gonna stay within the safe sound limits for your exhaust, then that's all good, it's your decision. You should remove a lot of the recommendations because they won't pass your decibel measurement 7 feet behind your bike where cops will always be...lol
