First bike with Fuel Injection questions
Hello all,
Just bought a 2017 Breakout and I'm missing the ease of a carburetor already!
Changed the pipes and now the check engine light is on. Not sure how to pull the codes since there is no ignition switch with key fob bikes.
Anyone know the proper sequence?
Also, gonna need to tune to EFI for the pipes is what I'm guessing the engine light is telling me so what "computer" do I need to be able to read codes and make changes??
On another note, in the process of putting a 250 on the back and trying to get the all the "homework" done before taking it apart... I see the spacers are part of the ABS sensors on one side of each tire. Has anyone been able to machine these down to the needed size without damaging the sensor? Can the sensors be removed and reattached to the spacer? I'm guessing my rim will be wider than the stock so I will need to do something with the spacers.
Thanks for any info!
Scott

Get yourself a tuner. Below is a link for pulling up codes, never done the rear tire conversion so cannot input that.

Those procedures won't work as far as I can tell... No ignition switch and no odometer reset switch. It's kinda an "all in one" switch that cycles through the different speedo readings so I'm confused to say the least...
when you get to the speedo display you want to reset, hold the button down until it resets. the stop/run switch should cycle same as ignition on keyed bikes, at least my breakout does.Info should all be in your owners manual.
There are two kinds of fuel mapping (tunes) with a Harley EFI system.
1) There is open-loop. The EFI supplies fuel based on an AFR(air-fuel-ratio) MAP in the tune. It does this without any feedback from O2 Sensors... The early EFI bikes, both EVO Motors and Twin Cams up to 2007, run entirely in Open Loop and can run really well this way. They are tuned to run in open loop...
2) There are bikes that use feedback from O2 sensors ('07 & up) in an area of the map referred to as closed-loop. In these cells, the O2 sensors read real time O2 levels and adjust the fuel. This is a more accurate tune and takes into consideration various changing conditions and lets the ECM adjust the fuel to match the changes. Harley bikes with O2 sensors usually have open-loop portions of the fuel map at the extremes, and the middle areas are closed-loop.
If your bike came stock w/O2 sensors, you will fall under the second group. I would install O2 bungs, to fit your OEM O2 sensors, onto your exhaust. If you just turn off the O2 sensors (which can be done with certain tuners) but leave a map designed for partial closed loop operation in the ECM, I believe your bike will not run well.
Your other option would be to go to a good dyno tuner, and ask them to tune your bike completely for open loop...
I made the switch from years of tuning carbs to EFI... I am reading and learning, but by no means an expert at EFI tuning. While more complicated than carbs, EFI has many more tuning parameters and can really dial in the way a bike runs...
Good luck and enjoy the bike...!

Your pipes with no 02 bungs are for pre 2007 bikes. Odd they would have been sold to you. Can you use your stock head pipes and get some slip ons that appeal to you, hence not bypassing a fairly important part of the fuel management system.
A TTS Mastertune is one choice for ecm re- programming, it can also read and clear diagnostic trouble codes.

You are going to need a tuning Device. You need a tuner that allows you to take the sensors out of the mapping Strategy. Before you do this, I suggest talking with others that have done so about pros and cons. I'm surprised there isnt a module on the market for scooters that sends the required signal back to the tuner.
