dropped it off last night. They said they listen to it and open the primary up and inspect the comp. If needed they'll replace it under warranty.

Figured I'd post an update here. So the dealer couldn't find anything wrong. They opened up the primary, replaced the primary cover, checked and re-torqued all the drive components and then refilled the primary with Formula +.

I had forgotten to ask them to switch my SYN3 to Formula + but they did it anyway. I haven't heard the knock since.

I put almost 300 miles on the bike yesterday in 90* heat and she purred like a kitten the whole time.

Default Compensatory knock

Do you think the syn3 had anything to do with the noise?
somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the formula + thicker than syn3 ? The formula+ being 50w and the syn3 20w50 right?

a lot of people on here and other places on the googlewebs suggested the SYN3 might be the issue. The owners manual calls for it, but it IS thinner than Formula +

I'm guessing the noise just gets lost in the goopier oil.

Harley was always against using synthetic oil .... until of course, they had Syn3 to sell...

Their big hook was to be able to use the same oil in all three holes...! (I never really found it all that big a problem keeping track of 3 different fluids, but that's just me)

I forget the year Syn3 first came out, but shortly after, I tried it in my bike... all three holes

I immediately noticed a lot more noise from the trans, and primary.... that Syn3 lasted about 300 miles before I drained it and put Formula+ in the primary, and gear oil in the trans.... I am now convinced that each component has it's own particular nuances, and should use the appropriate fluid.

While I'm sure Syn3 won't damage any of those components, in my experience, it led to a lot more noise in the areas mentioned...
