Default Combination Spedo/Tach Softail Installation?

Anyone install the HD Speedo/Tach on their softail? It is described as a "direct plug-in". Does that meanunplugging the stock and plugging in the new?

On my 03 there was an extra wire (pink I believe) that had to be pushed into the connector, but other than that it was plug and play

Doesn't the dealer have to do the installationso they can reprogram the new odometer with thecurrent miles? I've heard they won't sell 'em over the counter.

Plug and play. It's a simple task.

Doesn't the dealer have to do the installation so they can reprogram the new odometer with the current miles? I've heard they won't sell 'em over the counter.
Dealer don't do jack to it. They just tell the MOCO what miles need to be in the odo. For my 03 I had to guess where I would be in miles when the unit finally showed. Missed it by a couple of hundred. [:@] Now that the bike has over 32000 miles on it, it don't matter much.

Did the install myself. Just needed to add the infamous "pink" wire as described above. Also you will need to re-use the mounting ring from your existing one. (Or at least I did)

I see... Interesting. Anyone could buy a used bike with 20K or so on it, order a new speedo, keep the old one... Then ride the thing for 40K or so, put the original speedo back on it and sell it for a 20K bike. Probably more than make up for the cost of the speedo.
