Default shifter problem

My dad has an 06 heritage classic. Last night we were going to go for a ride but his shifter started acting funny. After he shifts it doesnt spring back to the middle. It either sticks up or sticks down. Any body know what the problem is?

I had the same problem. The shaft that the shifter pivots on sticks. I used sandpaper and re-greased the shaft.

I had the same problem on mine at about 300 miles. It turned out to be a burr in the housing where it pivots. Tech sanded that down, reapplied anti-seize compound and buttoned it back up. It's over ten thousand now and no more trouble.

I had the same problem pop up on my 07 Deluxe today. I have 2400 miles on the bike now. This shifter would not return after shifting up or down. I rode the bike later today without any problems.

How do I go about sanding the housing? I'm not sure I understand just yet.

I believe what they are referring to is the sifter pivot point itself.
If you look at the heel/toe arm it rocks on a pivot point/bolt, that's the spot they are talking about.
Take that bolt out and see if it is rough or has machining burrs on it. Also look inside the arm itself for the same things. A little bit of work with some fine sand paper, clean it carefully and get a good coating of anti sieze or graphite grease and you should be good to go. If it still a bit sticky check the shifter rod ends to see if they might be sticking also. A little cleaning and the same kind of grease job should get you shiftingsmoothly again.
Good Luck and let us know if you find anything new, you never know if it couldhelp the next guy fix his.

Mine isn't doing it at 300. But I may as well check it before it becomes an issue.
Thanks.
