Hey softail experts, I have a problem with my 2012 deluxe.
The speedometer stopped working (intermittent problem) and the gear selection doesn't indicate the gear selected. And what is worse is when the speedometer is not working the bike dies as I'm riding it as I let off of the throttle and pull in the clutch to coast. It starts right back up after and rides fine until I repeat to coast/come to stop.
The engine dying and speedometer not working is related, because when speedometer is working (intermittent problem) the bike does not die and rides fine.
I can almost say that it is not a bad voltage regulator, as that was the Harley dealership solution... needless to say it didn't work.
Are your self-cancelling turn signals functioning normally? Did your bike throw any codes? The gear selector doesn't work because it is calculated based upon your speed and RPM. So, if your speedo isn't working the gear selector won't either.
One possible cause of your problems is a dirty or faulty vehicle speed sensor (VSS). You can clean it and see if it resolves the problem. If not, it must be replaced.
