Yeah, I've never lost an emblem either - changed it in '09 my choice, and I haven't heard an epidemic of caps coming off. Not sure about paint prep. When people debadge their tanks the paint is always fully intact underneath, but the adhesive seems to do its job considering how many are out there since the '90s. Think you're right, someone gave that one a good twist...
By correct preparation of the painted surface I mean cleaning with alcohol. Residue from polish and wax reduced the effectiveness of the tape.
Lol, yeah not their strongest feature. Those new Thruxton Rs are pretty sweet, but they stole your fake carburetor idea! At least yours can't void the warranty...you musta got the SE model!! Shoot, that street tuner is probably as close as they could get to your original...
Winner!
Ha! Absolutely. I swapped emblems in '09 and it's stayed fine since. When we can't trust tape anymore we're screwed.
Guy who designed that must have got fired. "It doesn't do anything, but this is how you fasten it"....those rivers were probably taped on too
Well, he meant 1999/2000 when he said turn of the century...but otherwise in my experience my answer is Yes to all your questions...including it vibrates more at 65+...but I like it personally. It's not a buzz like the old "B" motor. Reminds me of my Evo. I'm really enjoying it. Nice thing is I just carry a roll of duct tape in the saddlebag and I'm ready to fix anything...bwahahaha!
Seriously, taped on crap is annoying to me...but this bike is damn amazing otherwise so far...and honestly, my fake gas cap hasn't come off..yet. When it does I'll go faster, cause it may be fake but it's real chrome!
Thanks so it has more vibs at higher speeds but the buzzing is better. My son has a 16 Slim and the one thing I don't like is the buzz I can feel in it. My 14 Road King is way smoother than his at speed. I need to test drive one so I can feel the vibe you're talking about. Thanks for the info.
The other night I simple gave that fake cap a twist and it comes right off. Take a look, I thought the same thing at the time, is that mount glued to the tank? evidently it is, and not very well. Here is a pic
Left Side Fake Gas Cap..

Yeah, vibes like exhaust are very subjective. My '05 Deluxe had a buzz at freeway speeds, My FXR has strong vibes at 70+, but still nice imo. My '09 Dyna shakes at low speed, but is smoother than any bike I've owned at 70+...The '16 RK had some vibes at speed, but just enough to know the engine is there, although the frequency seemed to put my hands to sleep on long rides. The '18 Heritage is very smooth at idle and low speeds (I miss the shake a bit honestly) but at 65+ (or about 2600 rpms) it has a nice vibe pulse. No high frequency buzzing like a metric or Twin Cam "B" motor, just mellow vibes I like.
If test ride one, deffinately get it up to speed for a bit.
What I think throws people off is the new gear whine at idle that replaced the clatter. Deffinately takes some of the old school charm out of the stock idle, but the good part is you pretty much don't hear it going down the road. Overall I'm much happier with the gear driven counterbalancer than the old chain driven one. My guess is HD will get the gears quieter in future models.
On my '05 fatboy the port side gas cap looking thing was the fuel gauge, which BTW never worked. At the time dealer told me not to fill the tank completely and the float wouldn't get caught at the top. Quite a solution I thought at the time. I just used the trip odometer as a gas gauge.
Current fatboys, I dunno. Think I would prefer nothing, no faux gas cap on the port side.
Was waiting & hoping the new heritage would be IT....whelp, after a weekend of serious looking I will be passing on the heritage. I do a lot of 2 up riding & I just don't think I can make this new heritage work, a 3-4 day extended weekend My wife & I can pack the 02 saddlebags & trunk to get us through.
The new bags cant even hold a half helmet or a leather jacket with liner....wtf? even the sales person at the dealership was stunned, the 114 motor & the new suspension might be an improvement - but pack anything in those bags & good luck finding the suspension tool to adjust your ride. HD made some strides but went backwards on the bags & if you put the trunk option on the heritage depending on color is more than a road king & right there with the glides...... I love the Heritage & am bummed - I now have to choose between the RK or the roadglide & I'm thinking the twisted cherry road glide?

I hear you about the bags and it's a personal choice..but for me, I'd get the Heritage and sort the bags out aftermarket. I say this because while the tour bikes are awesome, I prefer riding the Heritage for fun on the road. I'd choose the bike I liked first and make the bags work after. I get that you'd likely cross a price line, but the right bike might be worth the mod. If they're close enough you won't miss the Heritage I know you'll love the RK or Glide. Just my .02

A Deluxe with the right accessories could also be an option.
