What would you suggest in its place?

With simple search on this forum or anywhere really, there were a growing number of complaints about heat from the horse shoe oil tank, so they moved it. I never noticed it, but it apparently bothers a lot of people, especially people that ride late model Softails.

That freed up space to house some electronics. There would be more outrage if that cover wasn’t there to hide the electronics.

Agreed, the cover is actually a cover..not a fake cover. Doesn't look as classic as the oil bag, but it's doing its job. Side covers have been on Dyna's, FXRs, Touring, Sporties...it's a cover. Nothing new really.

Couple things... on the suspension, the wrench to adjust is included with the bike.

Second thing... are the flush mount tank caps not available for these bikes?

Gas cap is the same so I'd assume that works, but otherwise might take a minute to come to market as it's no longer a fuel gauge.

You may have meant this as a joke, but I actually DO carry a roll of duct tape with me. I've had to use it to tape my headlight to the bucket, when the bezel fell off at the beginning of a multi-day road trip, and no dealer anywhere on my route actually had one in stock (it held for the entire trip, through a lot of bad weather, and the extra week it took to get the part locally - so a total of about 2 weeks, without any sign the tape was coming unglued, or deteriorating in any way! )! Another time, I had to tape one of my front turn signals to the fork when the standoff broke, and I had to wait a few days for the part to come in at my local dealer. I have an after market jiffy stand, so I need a little rubber pad glued to the bottom of the outer primary to keep the stand from chewing the cover up. Well, near the beginning of another multi-day road trip, that little rubber pad fell off (the heat from the primary melted the glue), so I actually made a bumper pad by stacking about 20 layers of duct tape together, and sticking it to the outer primary cover. That held for WEEKS, until I got around to JB Weld'ing the new rubber bumper pad on!

Duct Tape has a permanent spot in my carry-on bag... it really does hold the universe together!!

Cheers!

Amen to that!

I was joking in a way, but you're dead right. I use it many ways/places they have yet to put in any advertisement! ...and if it gets you home it's made of gold in my book!

With all the changes I guess they were afraid to lose some of the traditional style, but since it's no longer of any function they cut corners on design...

I don't see too many other "non-functional fake crap" parts of the new design. Strange choice on the Moco.
What they should’ve done is have a real gas cap right and left, that way you’ll always have a closer side to fill up at the station and a nod to the earlier bikes with split tanks. Would probably have been a cheaper option. But hey, let’s put more useless fake crap on the new bikes, brilliant!

That's a good idea and solves the issues with manufacturing and using a real split tank.
