Default 05 speedometer sensor question

hi all, has anyone had this same problem also.
i have a 05 fatboy and while under warranty last year, my speedometer quit working, the engine light came on, and the bike wouldnt idle down properly, it would stall at idle. i took it to the garage and they replaced the speedometer sensor under warranty and it has worked perfectly until yesterday.
the same thing happened again. speedometer failed, engine light came on and bike stalled at idle. we stopped for lunch and when i drove this time it worked perfectly all the way home.
my question is, shouldi just buy a speeometer sensor and hang on to it until it fully goes, and is there a reason why i had 2 go in 2 years, is there something doing it?

usually it requires cleaning of the sensor. what is causing all the metal filings? I have yet to clean my 03 with a 6 speed.
