Default Help! Primary whistling sound

hey guys!! Hopin maybe someone could give me some insight on what I might have going on.

I have a 2007 softail standard. I needed to change my belt so I had to remove the outer and inner primary as well as the compensator and clutch assembly. No problem. Took it all off...changed the belt...put it all back together. Now I have a whistling sound (that was definitely not there before) at idle and throughout the gears.

This is a link to a video I took of the sound last night. This is my actual bike.

Somehow, you did not have the Auto tensioner set correctly and it over jumped tightening the primary chain too much,. I THINK.

Proper way is to collapse it and tie it with plastic zip ties. Get all back and torqued. Turn it all with rear wheel to make sure all is OK. Then cut the stsps and turn rear wheel correct way. It will jump. Then using thumb, check tension. You will see about 3/8 of motion. Push harder to collapse the heavy coils and you will see about 1/2-5/8 motion.at the tightest point checking ever 5-8".

I assumed you dropped it down and off before putting lock bar between sprockets to break compensator and then clutch hub?

It is making that noise setting still in netural? Did you use a 10lb Gage to set drive belt? How did you align rear tire. Remember, a Softail aligns to drive sprockets first, secondary to the swing arm bearing since that tolerance is +/-1/32.

Will it wear itself in or should I pop it open and adjust it?

If it was mine and I determined all the other things it could be was not it, I would surely pull that outer cover. No big deal and you can probably get away with using same gasket.
It's rough on that input bearing, chain, delrin shoes..ect.
And if something is not right, and broken, it could break, hang up primary chain and get you killed.

Primary could be too tight, but once it gets slack from the transmission bearings it might quit making so much noise, or it may keep tightening until the bearings fall out.

If your going back in there to check the auto chain tensioner, why not replace it with a Baker Attitude manual chain tensioner or a Hayden tensioner. The OEM auto tensioner is renowned for over tightening and because of the ratcheting ramp it never gets any looser only tighter.

I might do that. It’s just crazy that it was doin fine...no problems. Then when I took it off and put it back on it started this. And when I took it off I used the zip tie on it before I took it off.

Sounds like you have a bearing about to fail from a too tight primary chain.
