I live in Florida and tomorrow I'm going to change my oil. What viscosity should I use? The manual says SAE60 for 80 degrees and above. Is anyone using SAE60. I'm also going to use synthetic oil. Are the viscosity ratings the same?
I could ask the dealer these question but I like the opinions of the people on this forum...
Will your bike be exposed to any ambient tempuratures under 80 degrees in the foreseeable future before your next oil change? I'd just go with a good 20w-50 synthetic such as Mobile 1, Amsoil, or Royal Purple. Any one of those oils can handle all the heat you can dish out.
I switched to SYN3 at the first change, but just picked up Mobil1 20-50W for V-Twins for the engine and primary and Mobil 1 75-90W for the tranny for the next one.
I would stick to the Mobil 1 or Amsoil synthetic and not use the dino oils, your bike should run a bit cooler and last longer with either one of them.
I just switched to Amsoil 20/50 and yes indeed it runs around 15-20 cooler on the oil temp. Up till now I thought all you guys were bull$hitting me. Is it quieter? Never made noise before and still don't.

I think they did a test a while back on certain oils and out of 1 thru. 25 the HARLEY SYNTHITIC was 25th!!My bike is 06 SCREMIN EAGLE 103 FAT BOY so it allways had synthitic oil in bike and at 1000 mile service they used HARLEY synthitic but at 1800 miles I changed my on oil to MOBIL ONE 20w 50w for 'V' TWINS and I put MOBIL ONE TRANNY OIL 75w 90w in my tranny, easyer to find neutral and has never run hot but sure it runs cooler with the MOBIL ONE for 'V' TWINS, go to AUTOZONE and dont look for silver bottle it comes in black, but tranny oil is silver and looks like water bottle with a long skinny neck so easy to put in tranny, next time you are at HARLEY shop ask who makes there oil??!! I still do not know.
