is there any way to know what engine temperture is other than a hand held remote reading thermometer?
Using my Powervision, my engine and head temps average around 300-330 degrees in 80-90 degree temps outside.

HD has done a pretty good job at making the M8's feel cool to the rider/passenger, but they still run too hot for their own good. Cooling them down will help them last longer AND provide improved performance.

Check out a Report on ideal temps for engine performance HERE.
On thing

" Retarding the timing will help prevent the heat from climbing higher, but it also drastically reduces power/performance."

It's not the timing that does it but the temp itself. Timing only adjusted to compensate for higher temps with cause faster burn.

I hope the 300-330 is the CHT reading off your PV. If it is the engine temp (ET) reading, that is Much too hot and is steadily destroying the engine.
