There is an Engine Temperture sensor, but no temperture gauge. Is there an Idiot light in the speedo that lights if engine temp gets to high?
is there any way to know what engine temperture is other than a hand held remote reading thermometer?
Using my Powervision, my engine and head temps average around 300-330 degrees in 80-90 degree temps outside.
As already mentioned, you can use a FP3 or PowerVision to monitor the temp and a variety of other things. I have a Power Vision on all my bikes and use it as a gauge cluster.
HD has done a pretty good job at making the M8's feel cool to the rider/passenger, but they still run too hot for their own good. Cooling them down will help them last longer AND provide improved performance.

On thing
" Retarding the timing will help prevent the heat from climbing higher, but it also drastically reduces power/performance."
It's not the timing that does it but the temp itself. Timing only adjusted to compensate for higher temps with cause faster burn.
