I did a search and didn't find an answer. I've noticed that sometimes (not always) but mostly when hot, when starting my 07 Deluxe, it takes 2 tries before it will start. However, if I start the bike before the engine and security light goes out, it will start up immediately everytimehot or cold. Does anyone know if starting the engine before the engineand security light goes outwill damage anything?
I seriously doubt it, the egine light is just telling you there isn't any oil pressure, big surprise, and the security light is on while its looking for andrecognizing the key fob.

You know, I kept meaning to post this same exact question...mine always starts right up when I start it before the light oues out. Interesting. I doubt if it will hurt anything.
My 07 Heritage is also a hard-starter when hot. I didn't have that problem before I changed to aftermarket exhaust. It doesn't bother me, but it is...Weird.
I think Shovelhead Bob said that you should definitely wait as the bike is going thru diagnostics. I always wait. if it takes a few turns to start its not a big deal to me vs the chance that system is not done checking things out.
and with the PCIII I think it affects the startup. it was mentioned on here before about how those with it will take one or two more cranks to get it started with a PCIII vs without one.
There was a question like this in American Iron Magazine over the past year.
The problem that the owner was having was the speedo would swing all the way up and then go out while riding and another owner complained of the same thing followed by rough running or stall and on start up both were OK and nothing was found at the dealer. American Irons' answer was that it may have been caused by the ECM not finising its diagnostic check before the engine was started.
They reccomended that the correct start up procedure was to turn the ignition on then the run switch (on handlebars) to on and wait for the engine light to go out before starting. Theay also said that it was correct to always shut off the bike by using the run/stop switch on the bars first followed by the ignition switch. This is also the way that I was shown when I bought both of my HDs at Bartels HD in So Ca.
