my first Hd with oil cooler and already not happy of its placement after 800 Miles

At least the oil cooler is only about $120 bucks

I think it relies in part on the airflow created by the wheel/tire turning. Damage to the cooling fins won't be more than cosmetically unattractive. Damage to the lines would of course be an issue, but they are pretty well protected by the fins.

I'm surprised that Harley doesn't include a cover that can be replaced if it gets beat up.

My UltraCool unit came with a cover.
I've got about 1000 miles since my install and there's no signs of any damage to it.

Harley sells a cover with. Heavy duty mesh. Comes in chrome or black.

Just go to your local DIY shop and find some louvred mesh - chrome or black - and cut a bit to fit. Stick it between the trim piece and the cooler. It's a <$10 fix and only takes a few minutes.

I did that with a sheet of brass grate. I love how it turned out.
