Default 2007 softail classic custom

Been having some charging issues with the bike lately. I hooked up fault finder and found some shorts in the wiring in the taillights. Replaced the voltage regulator and it is still not charging. I have a short I believe in the run switch and planning on replacing the switch however I believe that the stator has failed. I did smell the primary oil and it doesn’t smell like burnt wires but when I take it for a short run the fins on the voltage regulator does not even get a little warm like they do on my 1200. Any thoughts and is this a good indication? I’ve checked and cleaned all grounds, battery and did ohms test. Also I’ve heard it’s not bad to replace the stator is this true?
