New to the forum, and was searching for some opinions and input on a bike I'm looking at buying. I have my eye on 2 bikes - a 2017 breakout and a 2018. The 2018(M8 114) is brand new, and a great price. However I really like the look and the customization of the 2017 I'm looking at - also in the same price range. My question is for you guys that have happened to ride both is how much of a difference did you notice in the performance and torque between the 114 and 103 motors? In my bit of research it seems the consensus is its slightly noticeable(I believe HD says its 10% more torque) but not a reason to pick one over the other. Other drawback in the 2018 is 1.5g less of a tank(3.5 v 5.0). HD advertises the 2018 with 47mpg(doubt it) and wondering from you guys who have ridden the 2018 or newer how you view the smaller tank and stopping more. I should note I'm not a long distance rider -- mostly keep it in state and county/backroad riding. Thank you guys I really appreciate your time and thoughts!
The model 2017 are perfect and beauty, 2018 are ugly and with little and ugly tank.

Funny you say that, because thats pretty much how I feel as well. 2017 bike is such a beauty - and I feel like although I'm sure its a great bike, HD consumerized a gnarly bike like the breakout similar to how pickup trucks have moved away from rugged/utility to consumer styled. My only reservation is the great deal I found on the '18 and the few riders who have talked highly of the M8 114. Decisions! Thanks again brother!
I've been in your shoes a little bit more than a year ago. Decided to go for 103 Breakout. Why did I make this decision? Of course, the new 114 Breakout is more powerful and more modern, Harley claimed also the weight savings (a bit too much plastic on new model for my taste), then you take into an account a smaller fuel tank, at the end that claimed weight saving is not so amazing. New engine can be a bit more economical, but how much I really don't know. You could read about the welds reduction on the new frame and how much lighter and stiffer it is. To me, as someone who studied the engineering all these claims looked a bit unreal. To be honest, I'm absolutely fine with the old frame design. When it comes to the Twin Cam engine, it is bashed mainly for the cam chain tensioners (issue mainly with early years) and the crank runout, cos of the cold pressed crank and poor quality control (well, in reality an M8 cranks are made in the same way). All in all, after all of mine "pre buy" reading about Harley Davidson, their issues with every new engine design, how long it took them to sort out the issues... I thought it'll be better to go with older design. Only God knows how many surprises are in front of the M8 engines in the next 2-3-4 years. At last, I didn't like the small fuel tank and the digital speedo on the new model. This was bothering me probably more than all things mentioned above. It just didn't. look right to me. All the above might sound like a bit of a mess. And it is. This is how messy it was for me to make a decision. So far, I'm happy with my choice. How you decide is up to you. I would never say the new Breakout is not a good bike, because it is. It just wasn't for me. Wish you all the best.

In the future, if you choose 2017 model, you can add an upgrade in the engine if you need more powerful....buy if you buy a 2018 with powerful engine, you have got forever an ugly bike....powerful....but very ugly.

fjm9085, I was doing just like you very extensive "research", the dealer was trying to convince me why I should buy the new model. I've had at that time in the spotlight the bike which I bought at the end. I said to the salesman...... it all sounds good what you telling me, but.....when I look at this 2017 bike and what extras it's got, when I look at the spending loads of cash ( the difference was around 9000 euros) to customise it and make it just like the 2017 bike I wanted to buy, I asked him.... is this 2018 model really 9000 euros better bike? I didn't get the answer. In the past months I kept an eye (just out of curiosity) on the prices here in the UK. Seing advertised 2013-2017 bikes compare to the 2018+ model, the previous model holds the price better.
