Default Replacement Headlight UK UK

Hi there,

My headlight needs replacing (I think a stone must have cracked it).

I have seen that I can save a stack of cash if I buy one from the states.

Now then, this might be a stupid question - but I was wondering if I would need to adjust the beem from a US part - so it works on UK roads? Obviously we drive on the left, and I know car headlight beems point in a different direction to vehicles that drive on the wrong side of the road (!). So would I need to consider this if I purchased a headlight from the states? Or is the "direction" of the beem set from the mounting, and not the actual replacement headlight glass?

Also, if anyone can suggest a cheapy place to order one from, I would be very pleased!

Thanks.

Just priced up some passenger footboards from USA and by the time I have paid postage ÂŁ50, import duty and VAT I would save ÂŁ17 as oppsed to Gurnsey HD ! Hardly worth it.

The American headlamp would have the glass lens directing the bean the wrong side of the road on dip and I doubt if you could obtain a european glass from the US.

Have you tried Gurnsey HD they are VAT free to the UK and free postage

It's not a stupidqusetion, the only stupid question is the one you DON'T ask.

PWHOG,
I could be wrong but I don't believe that there is anydifference in bike headlights made for here in the US or overseas. The alignment procedure listed in the ownes and service manual's doesn't specify any difference, and there are no part number differences in headlight assemblies that I can find.
I suppose you could adjust it to one side if you wanted to. But I don't believe that it would be all that great an idea for you in the UK considering the ease with which you cancross the channel into other countrieswhere you would have toride on the other side of the street.
Beisdes, the idea of having a headlight that points more to one side on a bike seems kind of silly, if not dangerous to me. Serious night time road hazards like animals (primarily deerin this area) don't limit themselves to coming from one side only.

Headlamps are calibrated to be centered, not to the left or right. The only way the headlight will point to the wrong side of the road is if you are driving into opposing traffic.

Newer HD headlights all seem to have plain lenses, unlike Triumph, BMW and some others that have light spreading sections cast in. So, you should be able to use a lense intended for driving on the right side as opposed to the correct side of the road.

100% right, headlights point straight ahead. There are no adjustments for left or right, only up and down.

The only headlights Iever even heard of not pointing straight are on some very expensive luxury cars, that when you turn left or right the headlights are actually motorized to turn into the direction the car is turning.

My 2000 FXDX is a US bike and when I got stationed in the UK they made me swap out the Glass lens to a UK one as part of the light conversion. If it is just a clear peace of glass it will not matter but if it is like mine with lines on the lens, then you will need a unit intended forleft side of the road driving aka right hand drive. The lines on the lens deflect the light away from oncomming trafic. I think the newwer bikes have a more centered beam pattern.

All headlights for the UK must dip to the left ! If we go into Europe we must modify the headlamp so it will not dip into the oncoming traffic as they are on the other side of the road. The US lights are not the same as the UK Lenses therefore you will not be legal with a US lamp.
