Like any ext warranty...it's worth it if you end up using it for more $$ than it cost. You'll never know until then. You have to think about what you will be doing yourself anyway and the change of something major going wrong. Generally they are a tool for dealerships to make a very high return.

But only you can say if some extra peace of mind is worth it.

Well,

I'll tell ya what the guys on this board told me when I asked the same question in addition to mythoughts and opinions based on what I have read and experienced. If you feel more comfortable with the extended, then do it.

BUT ... You get 2 years from the date of purchase and even then it is a fight to get the dealer to do something about a problem. Some dealers will stand behind the modifications if you have them do the work. Pipes, Chip, intake and stuff. Get it in writing!!

Even ifyou can get that type of deal, I would still stick with the factory warranty with no extension.

If not, the real question is are youNOT going to modify your bike for 2 years or more? Mmmmm I couldn't and didn't.

My father told me long ago that extended warranties are generally a waist of money for consumers. Life has validatedthis rule to be generally true in my experience. If you get 2 years with no problems, you willlikely get a few more before something major. Then you will be out of extended warranty anyway.

With regard tomaintenance programs. It is up to you but frankly, I feel my bike, is my maintenance. I got a shop manual and I have done my own 1k maintenance. Most of the checks are fairly simple. That way I know the real status of the maintenance of my bike vice a little checklist with a signature stamped on it.

There you have it, one guys opinion. Hope it helps...Congrats on the new ride!!!

Mike

Well, I'm gonna stand on the other side of the fence. I say YES absolutley buy it. My experience with the dealers and the warranty has been great. Case in point: I was up in Edmonton attending a HOG Rally, rode up from Calif., The starter button stuck in the start position, engaged the starter while riding, and burned all the wiring and starter before I realized what was happening. I called Heritage HD in Edmonton, they came and towed my bike to the shop, tore it down and gave me an estimate of $1500.00. I told them my bike was still under factory warranty, they checked and found out that my bike was six days out of warranty! I whipped out my extended warranty card, they called HD, got authorization and my bike was fixed quickly, and all I paid was the deductable. My bike was equipped with after market exhaust, big bore kit, cams and PCIII. It had no effect on the warranty. I say it was WELL worth it in this case!

We all know the price of labor for HD's is so high that the price of an extended warranty in my opinion is well worth it. Doesn't take much to go wrong to cover the cost. I like the idea that I've got protection when I'm a long way from home and not have to worry about shelling out big bucks.

my thing is... for what the ext warranty cost you can damn near get the big bore kit or the 6 speed tranny. so if you buy the ext w and never use it you are paying to rebuild the motor and never doing it. better off not getting it saving the money and if you ever do tear the engine up get the big bore kit or same with the tranny....

Here's my experience with the extended warrantee:

Buying it got me a lower interest rate for my financing. The amount of interest saved is almost equal to the cost of the warrantee (and if I pay it off early, I'll save MORE than what the warrantee cost). So essentially, it was free for me. That's good. What's even better is that just before I was supposed to leave for Gettysburg Bike Week on July13th, my starter sh*t the bed and took out the ring gear on the clutch basket. Thanks to having the extended warrantee, instead of having to pay around a grand to get it fixed, it cost me $58.00 ($50.00 deductible + taxes). So, I'm way ahead of the game now, and I'm still covered for another 4+ years. YMMV.

Cheers!

I had the same experience as you Clammy. The dealer lowered my int rate so I could buy the ext warranty so it was virtualyfree ( same payment as if I wasnt buying it before ).I paid $850 for an extra 4 years , so I have 6 years of warranty total. Is is worth $850 for 6 years of protection? F*(^K yes it is.Mine is From Harley Davidson , not some mom and pop Dealer Offered warranty that questions everything when its time to use it. Theres no debateabout if its covered when you toss the HD Extended Warranty card down. People whine about the cost of an Extended Warranty but have no Problem dropping $1K for Chrome covers , Rims, Paint,Blah Blah Blah. The decision is yours

thanks for the 411 fellas. no more of a mechanic than i am(i know how to start it & that's about it) sounds like it would be the way to go. not to mention, i am not exactly $loaded$ either. a hefty fix r up would do me in for sure. anybody else have just enough $ to buy something if it runs right and NO $ left over to fix it if it goes wrong? surely i am not the lone wolf on this deal.
