When I changed the speedo on my 08 FXD, I had to do the "cable process" but that was not required for my 12 FLSTC.
On a side note, the FP3 I have on the FLSTC can also be used to re-calibrate my speedo! That's important to me since I plan to change my forward sprocket from 32 to 34 teeth.

Prior to the BCM, there were a series of speedos (forget the years) where the speedo got the mileage from the ECM via a temporary cable connection...... Then you would install the speedo and drive for 25 miles. After 25 miles, they were permanently married.

I've never read about going the other way... changing the ECM and matching it to current mileage... or if it even needs that...

Someone will know/chime in with the procedure...
I changed my speedometer / tach cluster on a 22 RGS. Not sure I like it. After the 31.1 miles it did work properly with the correct mileage. My question is, if I decide that to take it off, is it married totally to my bike's ECM or can I sell it to someone else and be sure that it will go through the 31.1 mile process and work on their bike? Thanks, Jim

There is a certain mileage you can drive the bike, before the speedo becomes "married" to your ECM..... It is right around that 25, 30, 35 mile area.... Once you hit that mileage, the speedo is married to your ECM and would be worthless to anyone else...

I believe the install instructions will have that information...

Once the 30 miles is on the bike and it display correct mileage it is married.
Prior to the mileage running through ECM it was all in the speedo head. Once it went to the ECM the head was no long involved other than displaying it.
If my memory is still it tack 2004 was the change over to ECM logging mileage.
