I did a 95 build on my '03 88 this Winter and couldn't be happier with the results.... I do think you need to get with a good builder that has a rep for building what you are looking for...( you mentioned low end grunt)...that was my goal.. everything we did was doneto move all the tourque we could as close to "off idle" as we could get it..... make sure all your component choices are made so they all work well together... seen too many "pic and choose" builds whose components read like a who's who list of goodies but don't compliment each other when used together..... don't be afraid to fly away from the "eagle" either.... my build used S&S jugs, pistons, gear drive cams, and intake..... kept the stock Harley heads but had a major rework done by the tourqe Gods at R&R....... it is a $4K build.... but it's a 95 incher making 107# tourque that reaches 100# at 2600RPM and stays over 100# 'till a tick past 5200RPM all while running smooth and cooler than before and still getting high 30's MPG,(41 on a recent 220 mile trip)..... she only makes 93HP ...but it's tourque you ride, not HP..... She embarrasses the hell outta a buddy's'04 110inch Screamin' Eagle Deuce all day long,( I'm sure he could run me down on a 2 mile drag but at 0-90MPH I have 3-4 bike lengths on him and I weight 60 pounds more than he does). I looked into going big bore for my 07 96 cu in. The story I got is that the 95 is to the 88 as the 103 is to the 96, which is really just increasing displacement through increase in stroke. Taking the 96 to the 110 is more like taking the 88 to the 103 which requires boring in addition to the stroke and a hell of alot more money.
Net net, it seems the bang for the buck is adding displacement via the simple kit to the the next displacement via stroke in addition to a cam enhancement. The extra money not spent on the bigger bore can be spent on other items that may have more impact.
I'm now very interested in this S&S gear driven cam vs chain driven as a way to add 12 - 15 hp? Anyone have experience with this?
Actually your adding displacement with bore size not stroke length.You can go to 98 inches from an 88 and up to 107 on a 96 without case boring or stroke changes. The s&s gear drive set up will give you more horsepower because your changing the cams outto a better performing cam(hence the horsepower increase.) All the gear drive is doing is helping maintain accurate cam timing and eliminating the problems associated with the chain tensioner shoes wearing out.
I had my '06 fatboy converted to a 95 by the dealer, stage two SE kit. Powerwise I'm happy with it. Dyno'd out at 84 hp and 90 ft lbs. I guess its just a question of how much power you want. In my case anyway the thing still gets over 40 mpg, pulls like a tractor right off idle to as fast as I want to go, I can pass anything I want to within the realm of sanity, and it'll cruise comfortably all day at 75. High rpm with a stroker isn't my cup of tea, and my opinion is that the stroke in a stock 88 is long enough, at least for my uses, which don't include hauling heavy loads like trailers etc. If I wanted to blast down the highway at120, I'd have just gone out and bought a new Hayabusa, cause that ain't Harley territory, at least not if you want the thing to live very long.

OK, help me out here, no stroke or bore changes and more displacement? Or does "case" boring mean that there is a sleave bore or other to accomodate bigger pistons? Or is it the heads? I know the S&S cams are longer duration, but HD also advertises a very significant resistance difference, but the differencet to a human turning the screw vs some horses could significantly skew perceptions here.
I was definitely turned away from the 110 vs the the 103 from the 96, even by the service guys. They didn't seem to think it was worth it. The read was 103 with cams if you were going to mess with the 96.
Ed, The 96" already has the stroker crank. it saves you approximately $1200.00 according to my source when you go to build a 103". To make a 96" a 103", you'll need to a larger bore piston.
A twin cam 88 with 1/8" overbored cylindersmakes a 95. There is no case boring necessary.You can buy the kit from HD, or have your original cylinders bored oversize and just buy new oversize pistons.Their Screamin Eagle accessory catalog explains all the various combinations. Add the stroker crank toan 88 with a big bore 95 kitand you have a 103, at quite a bit more cost, plus you have to remove the engine and totally disassemble it to add the stroker, while just adding 95 cylinders and cams is an in bike operation.
