Man, this is some good information. The dealership doesn't polish & port heads but they will be happy to sell me SE heads for about $900. I don't think so.
This is going to require some serious thought but I have until the dead of winter as I won't do anything while it's good riding weather. I think prices of shops go down in winter also. I know the dealer's do but I don't think I will have them do it. There is a guy who has quite a rep. for really knowing his stuff who I am beinning to cultivate.
What does it cost to send your heads off to some of these people you guys are referencing?

Racinjackson, I just pulled the Q baffles out and am running open pipes for now. My carb is jetted for straight through baffles so it runs pretty good and sounds fantastic. I will leave them out for a while just for grins.

Thanks for the info, the 98" looks like the way to go for the best bang for my buck. It will be a while though.

Darkside, thanks for the link to Bigboyz. I read everything he has to say on porting and am convinced he knows where of he speaks. $300.00 is looking like money well spent. He understands that the majority of us are not into high rpm bikes or we would not be riding Harleys.

Cool hope it helps.I see guys spending 4000 or more with the dealer and then put up numbers that don't justify the money spent.Harley has good parts but they come at a premium and theres no reason to spend that kind of money for these results.Another thing I don't like is the Harley builds tend to make the horsepower in the upper RPM range (where you don't normally ride!).Theres just too much newer cheaper technology out there to put up with the Imperialist dealers and their additudes(not all but most). If you look at the dealer stage II and some of these other kits you can't compare the price because you get so much more with these other kits than you do with the standard stageII.These other kits come with head work, gear driven cams that really are for performance(not anemic epa stuff),valvetrain components(lifters ,push rods, rockers etc)new Aluminum barrels w/nik-a-sil linings and top grade forged pistons(not cast stockers).Plenty of ways to skin a cat but theres also lotsa ways to get skinned.Buy using these proven combinations you get piece of mind in knowing the build will perform as promised and be reliable.I don't work for a shop so I,m not pushing anything.I just did tons of research and spent countless hours doing homework before doing my own build.I,ve got a friend with a Harley built 107 thatI run offfrom so bad that itssad and he's got almost 2ooo bucks more into his build then I do.

I kind of like the shorter stroke config of the 88, then boring it out to 95 (or buying HD's kit). I think it makes more of a "square" bore and stroke combination. It's worked for the Chevy small block all these years. Properly cammed and equipped air the right air intake and exhaust, I think a 95 would rip, AND have total longevity. Funny how Harley went away from the 4&1/8" stroke(Evo), only to go back to it a few years later.

I've been trying to stay out of this, but I can't help throwing in a comment made by a guy I knew many years ago. "The only substitute for cubic inches is more cubic inches."

Ihave talked with these guys a BBoyz and for the 300 bucks for their "street port" , I think you get a good return on your investment. I didn't go that way, choosing instead to have R&R do my heads, 'cause we changed valve sizes and the rest of the valve train components as well. I can say from personal experiance... these guys at R&R are low end torque Gods for sure.... probably the best 700 bucks I have ever spent on this bike!I really don't think that you can do a good 95 build without paying close attention to what you do to your heads. Them girl's twins have gotta breath!!! lol

I just got back from talking to my "new" mechanic. He's a former Harley dealer mechanic who is on his own now. We decided to put a 42MM Mecuni carb on it before doing anything else. He said I may like it so much I won't want to do a 95". Even if I do, I would have replaced the carb anyway so why not?
Thanks everyone for you imput.

I would recommend checking out Ebay and search for "Harley Big Bore". Right now there are new SE Stage II 95" kits for $499.00 and I watched NO ONE bid to 2 kits. I would get one but UPS won't ship to APO addresses.
