Default Possible Intake leak?

Hey guys, thank you for letting me post some questions. I have a 95 Softail, throttle is wide open when starting. Went for a ride, had a great day and parked it. Next day, start as usual and the throttle was wide open! Petcock was left on, gas in the crank case. Drained and replaced oil and filter. Cleaned my S&S Super E, everything was in great shape. Put carb back together, checked cables (open and return) all seems to work correctly. I'm left thinking there may be an intake leak, which is hard to check when it wont idle. Any suggestions or recommendations are greatly appreciated!

If I am understanding your post correctly: You had a wide open at idle issue, left the petcock open and found gas in the crankcase. You then disassembled & cleaned the carb up, put it back together, and now all seems OK....

If that's correct, the key to me is that your engine flooded with gas because you didn't close the petcock.. That's not a leaking intake seal symptom, although anything is possible.

I would guess that something (debris/dirt) kept the float valve open... Gas should not continue to flow and contaminate the oil, just because the petcock wasn't closed. Closing the petcock is just a failsafe for a misadjusted/open float valve. Because it seems to be working correctly now, you may have removed the offending dirt, and the parts/adjustments are OK...

If it should happen again, I would take the carb apart again, and rebuild it with new o-rings, gaskets and float valve/seat... then be sure to readjust the float before assembly.

Hope your carb cleaning fixed it, enjoy the ride..!

Thanks for the response. My apologies for not explaining thoroughly. After carb clean, oil change and cable inspection, the symptoms still persist and will not idle. Perhaps rebuilding the carb may be what's needed. I'll keep you posted with an update once complete.

try using a propane torch with a hose on it spraying by the intake , that will tell you if there is a leak
