Hi. Looking for recommendations for brake upgrades for my '06 FXSTS including replacement front & rear brake cylinders, front rotor and caliper. The bike has been in storage for a few years, the front and rear cylinders leaked and corroded the cylinders exteriors, so I want to replace them. I checked out the Arlen Ness big rotor, front caliper relocation upgrade. My riding style is mellow cruising on Cape Cod. I appreciate constructive recommendations. Thx.
OEM master cylinders are quite adequate and can be rebuilt; there are rebuild kits. Replace rotors with the HD "wanna be" floating rotors, lLyndall Z+ brake pads with SS brakelines and and your braking is more than adequate for "mellow cruising" riding. Of course, you can spend more money on upgraded equipment but unless you are an aggressive rider diving deep into turns, dragging pegs on track day, the upgrades are over kill and a waste of money. Spending some $$ on suspension upgrades would be a better "investment".
I am not familar with the components used in the FXSTS. You might do some research
into using the HD-Brembo caliper from the Touring bikes. They can be had pretty cheap
on Ebay. Paired with some EBC-HH pads and a good brand floating rotor (I used EBC)
along with stainless lines, you should have a really good system. On my '13 Slim, I
went with the XR1200 4-piston caliper because I liked the way it looks. HD has
since upgraded the Slim calipers to 4piston versions....
I have the same bike and replaced the stock front caliper with a Performance Machine 4-piston caliper. Stopping power is a lot better now (not super great, but a lot better) and likely wholly adequate for your riding style. You can get these at most aftermarket places.
I've used most the popular aftermarket like Performance Machine, Jay Brake, GMA and a few others I can't remember offhand and I settled on WilWoods on my hotrod shovel. Direct bolt up, clean and well made stuff. Customer service is top notch too if ever needed.
