Yeah, I saw that. And I watched the replay online and the announcer really flubbed the introduction. The auction was less than a minute long, and the bike was wheeled off the stage too soon IMHO. Anybody who didn't know the significance would have thought it was just another custom shovelhead. The bike is not for HD purists, that's for sure, but for people who like XP's and prototype's, it's the way to round out a collection on the cheap.
IMHO, if someone was into collecting XPs or prototypes, how this bike was announced would have had nothing to do with their interest.... they would have known about it prior to auction and been prepared to pay their top dollar....
I just don't believe there are more than a few people who agree this is anything other than another custom shovelhead.....

The seller, you, and ....???
Um,I hope you could tell..... that last line was tongue in cheek.... just messin with you....
1983 Harley-Davidson Softail for sale...This is another factory prototype. A preproduction Evolution Softail prototype for all you purists...It's being sold by "Jesse James" West Coast Choppers, has some history to it and has been somewhat restored/preserved by WCC according to the sellers narrative.
I was interested in the Road Worx frame when I saw it advertised in the old ER magazine. Price was too steep for me at that time, and they wouldn't dicker on the price!
When this thread was first started, and the way the Mecum description was written, first thing that crossed my mind was that the bike was a rolling trip to the bike confiscation yard, what with the Worx frame and titled as an HD. And I have some (unwanted) experience along those lines, LOL!
Reading back through the updated Mecum listing makes me think this bike might have one of the early bolt-on swingarm kits, so that it still has the HD frame. And since there weren't any VIN stampings on that era of frames, it would legitimately be titled by the engine number.
It's a nice looking bike. And I hate the "Pan-Shovel" designation. It never was a Pan, LOL! Always divvied the Shovels up into slab-side and cone motor. Pan-Shovel used to mean someone put a Shovel top end on their Panhead motor. Eh, but I'm a constipated ol' geezer (and get the discounts in all the stores to prove it!) so I reckon all y'all young pups can call it a Pan-Shovel, just like y'all call gas tanks and fenders "tins" when that originally meant the old 3-piece stainless fork/triple tree covers, LOL!
