If you are going to have the derby cover off I would also check the fluid level to make sure there is not too much oil in the primary case. There are several threads in here which discuss how much oil should be in the primary. For example my fat boy says to put 1 qt in when changing the fluid. However a quart of oil makes the level too high which causes the clutch to slip as well as the clunking sound that you mention. It also causes the release point in the clutch handle to be almost to the point where clutch handle is almost completely released. I would say if these 3 symptoms are happening in your case, the clutch is out of adjustment as there is too much fluid in the primary.

80259 is what I use. The 80262 is synthetic and the clutch mfgr says not to use the slippery stuff.

Thanks, just ordered a QT.
Stuffs hard to find at a reasonable price. No one around me has it.

My local Napa Auto Parts carries it. Can't remember exactly what I paid but I think it was only about $10.
