2012 RG idle speed
Could be a bit of a dumb question, but i recently bought a 2012 RG and wonder what it was a normal RPM at idle? i used to own a NT and i was sure it idled lower than my RG does. It is stored inside warm and at this time it idles at 1,000 RPM after a 3 minute warm up.

i was concerned about this very issue and discussed it with the service manager yesterday, here's what i found out. if it's cold outside they'll have a high idle till the motor warms up, and then should settle down at around 1,000 rpm's. now if you have the throttle anywhere above totally closed when you shut it down, you'll have a high idle the next time you start it. then you have to turn on-off-on-off a number of times to reset the idle setting. my 2013 idles at 1k rpm's after it warms up a bit. there's some sort of ambient temperature device i believe that reads the temp of the air and if it's cold, then the idle will be a bit high than you might expect till the motor warms up.

It is kind of amazing that the modern day fuel injection systems have a virtual weather montoring system built into them in order to control the proper mixing of air with fuel to comply with current EPA guidelines. No more 650 rpm idles or 'potato-potato-potato sound.
If any of us crave that "old" sound you will have to hang around the Harley shop on Saturday morning to relive it as the carbed bikes come and go.

That is so true. As the weather gets warmer the local HD dealer has free pancake breakfast as long as you ride in on an HD. It's amazing how many guys come through town and have breakfast and have the old 'potato-potato-potato' sound to their bike. I love it. Always gotta stop and listen.
