Default changing Debry cover

Is it possible to lay motorcycle on its side and change the derby cover with out loosing fluid? I just had 1000 mile service done and now I want to change stock cover to new skull cover. If not how expensive is it to change fluid again? Or should I wait till 5000 mile service?

You don't have to lay it on it's side to change the Derby Cover. Just make sure that it is standing straight up, and not leaning on the side stand. When it is standing staright up the oil level should be about 1" below the opening that the Derby cover is on.

As far as expense to change the primary fluid, it is just the cost of the oil. About 7.00 a quart I think, and it takes 1 quart.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Bill

Bill, as usual, is right on!! Oil shouldn't come out if the bike is level and has not been overfilled (yes, it happens). Typically HD's take 26 oz of oil, but frequently HD shops and wrench just dump in a quart and it has not caused any problems which I have heard of... The official word is that the wrenches don't do this, but I have seen it time and time again...

David,

My 2005 EG Classic even calls for 32 ozs. Not sure when they changed it from 26 to 32, but nothing on the engine/trans connection has changed that I know of. I guess HD decided that the 6 ozs. isn't to critical.

I know it's not just a Twincam thing, because my wife's 2001 Heritage calls for 26 oz. and it is a twincam.

Regards,

Bill
