I'm new to the forum and to HD ownership. I'm taking care of a friends' Night Rider while he's in the hospital and recuperating. His 2000 drips some oil on the left side under the engine, it looks like it drips off one of the shocks under the frame. I don't think the shock is leaking though, but that something is dripping on it. It looks like gear oil versus motor oil.
Is there a link or post here that shows how to check the various oils on the Night Rider? I know the engine oil is checked at the oil tank but don't know about the rest.
I still get those two mixed up... I really like the Allman Brothers "Midnight Rider" - anyway its the Night Train. The one I'm working with has a "blue flame" theme with blue flames in the paint, seat and clothing, and flames in the mirrors, kickstand and headlight. I will post a pic if that helps.
At any rate I'm concerned about riding it because my friend, the owner, does not have much idea of how to check the oil. I'm a former Suzuki / Honda mechanic (back in the 70's, early 80's) and have also worked on Hodaka, Kawasaki, BMW, Bultako, KTM, Penton, Vespa, Bajah-Chetak, Batavus and Puch products.
I currently own a 1982 KZ1000 LTD (in perfect shape), a 1997 Kaw Concours sport/touring and a Suzuki cruiser.
Hey I like the true-blue-brew-crew avatar, and they're winning this year! I have many miles and months in WI.
The oil leak on the Night Train, it's not coming from the primary cover (the left-most) cover. Since the cover sits lower than the gasket where the primary drive attaches to the engine cases I don't think it's from there either.
I will check the oil as was mentioned earlier to see if the oil tank may be overfilled.
tracing a leak can be one of the most frustrating processes.
Go Brewers! they just fell out of first, but they are slumping. If they can get hot for the next few weeks they will take the division. It is nice becaue they have not been to the post season in 25 years.
Hey Cheif I think that guy is trolling for a responce from us, I was in U.S.M.C. for 6 years and we should not let him fire us up, so when would you and some of my Jarhead buds want to go pound him? LOL Just kidding I'm jealous of his bike! I think you buy one get second free at $4999.00And my 06 which I ride it hard, no smoking burn outs, but knock on wood not any leaks! And not safe if leak gets on back tire YIKES!! PURPLE HAZE.
