In the olden days, Harley's were designed to leak oil on the chain for lubrication. Thattechnology has long since been improved. Harley's now have sealed chain cases and are not designed to leak oil at all. This is not rocket surgery .... If your bike is leaking ... it's due to a problem with your particular bike.
Clean the area where the oil is well, pressure wash if avail. Get a can of "Soft n Dri" spray deoderant and spray the previously oil coated areas. Put a couple of miles on it and check for the leak. A leak will be very noticable. This technique is used by racers and builders
I'm impressed by the faithfulness of HD owners.... Jap bike owners have few qualms about changing rides every few years when something newer, better, faster, cooler, etc. comes along. It's nice to know that HD is one of only two companies that boast of 100-year old technology in their motorcycles.
Ok, time is up without an answer. You probably own one of their cars.... its BMW. Their boxer twin used pushrods and air cooling well into the early '90's, these bikes were called "airheads". The later models had an overhead cam and four valves for each cylinder, with an oil-based cooling system, and these were called "oilheads". I think they are in the same price range as HD's, with smaller models starting in the low teens. I think the Sporty is cheaper than the low-end BMW's.
I was riding through Harrisonburg VA recently and stopped at the McD's on 11. It was starting to rain and I was on my way to Canaan Valley SP in WV. A Harley rider came up to me and introduced himself (I was on my Kawasaki Concours). His name was P. Davidson and he showed me pics of his first Harley, a 1929 model with hand oil pump, hardtail, springer front end, no lights. This was in 1939 when he was 19 years old. He showed me recent pictures of his Kaw Nomad that he rode coast-to-coast a few years back. He currently was riding a Suzuki cruiser, v-twin and shaft drive. He was 87 years old and still riding something. We had coffee and watched it rain like he!! for a while, then we both left in the rain.
Yes, they all leak. Good grief, take the Harley back, go buy a Shadow and be proud of the investment you have made. Lord, questions like this is why bikers beat "Harley riders" up.
You know, the reason they call those things 'Shadow' is because they look just like a real Harley, but there is nothing to them. By "bikers", do you mean those people in the silly tight pants who ride bicycles?
Hey oldtimer of nm, I bet they wear the MILLY VANILLY extra tight so you can see there big bulges, or a rolled up sock, why do these people come here and say just enough to make you mad or say something you will regret later, I have NEVER gone to another bike (JAP) forum and try to troll for E-MAILS or get my rocks off reading all the come backs, I stopped by a SUZIKI, YAMAHA, and KAWSAKI dealer rolled in one, and the guys out front really are JEALOUS of HARLEYS, but I had stopped there to check out some gloves and maybe a KEVLAR helment, so about 3 guys outside smoking cigs., must had been sales people because place was dead! But they started with do you need a bowl to catch my oil so I could put it back in!! Then they start with motor looked lose in frame, I just smiled put my helment back on and did a hole shot in there crappy rock parking lot and throw rocks and dirt on them, made my day but W.W.J.D.?I need to chill. PURPLE HAZE.

I believe that the lowest priced BMW is an F650GS at about $7000, but its only a 250ccdirt bike. There are acouple of other models that are under $10K with a couple of thetouring models pushing the $20K plus mark, without options added.
And the technology of the Boxer engine may be over 100 years old, but BMWonly started making bikes in 1923. So they got a ways to go to equal the 100+ years of Harley or Ford.
They do NOT all leak. The Pans did but now they don't leak unless something is wrong. I would want it fixed too.
I haven't seem any "bikers" beating up Harley owners. Around here everyone seems to get along and have a good time. Glad I don't live near you. I might get the wrong label and things could get ugly huh?
