Counter balancer knock?
New here, seems like a good forum! Anyway, I have a new(1200 miles) Deluxe, and I hear a dull knocking noise coming from the bottom end. This noise gets worse the hotter the temps are when I ride, and is most noticable at say 25 MPH in second gear, and 35 in third. This noise is most pronounced under part throttle constant rpm cruise. Also let me say, this is not a tranny noise nor a lugging issue. I've heard it from day one, but it didn't concern me until I rode in some stop and go on a 85 degree day. At that point it was noticable enough to be annoying. I'm a maitenance mechanic, by trade, and not new to mechanical noises, and my feeling is ths may be something to do with the counter balancer in the B motor. The location, and the fact that the knock seems to be coming from the same location as the whirring of the counter balancer. Some might say it sounds a little like a washing machine out of balance, not that bad, but the same sort of noise. Also, I rode an 80" shovel for ten years prior to this, so I know what a noisey engine is all about. I guess I'm just wondering if this is what a counter balanced motor sounds like? I mentioned it at my 1000 service, but as luck would have it, it was 58 degrees in NH saturday morning, and it was quiet as a church mouse. Btw, I don't hear it at all in 5th or sixth, but that could just be the wind drowning it out.
Thanks for any thoughts,
Bob.
