Default How lucky was I

Had a nice ride Sunday on my 06 Fatboy enjoying the good weather. The next day I decided that I ride to work, having two bikesthe other one is a little 250 metric,I decided to take the metric for the sole reason that I haven't ridden it ina while. What happen next as shook me up and now I am thinking if I should hang up my boots.Ongoing arounda roundabout I notice that a car was going to go right through the roundabout and T-Bone me if I didn't hit the brakes.Within a split second I applied the brakes which cause me to drop my bike and at the same time I could see the car miss me by inches,I recieve a minor strain in the ankle with no other injuries and surprising the bike recieved minor damaged(lucky it wasn't the Fatboy). The standard excuse was given by the car driver (which did stop) is that he didn't see me.I have decided to repair the 250 and sell it because if I was a couple more feet advanced I would of been smack in front of the car.I am still undecided about if i should also sell the fatboy and hang up the boots or leave time to pass and get back on.I just don't want regret either way which is making my decision diffcult.Has other riders been in the same situation where by you had a near miss which cause you to think of giving it up or am I beening a wooss.

did the same thing many years ago when i was younger and stupid.... came off my jap racerfor the 4th time in what was then 2 years of suicidal riding, and basically lost my nerve. sold my bike and didn't get another one till i bought the heritage
Now i am older and still stupid but figure that the heritage just has to slow me down a bit.

Let me ask you this? Did you quit everytime you have a problem with something? Get your a$$ back on the bike NOW and stop analyzing it...**** happens. If you love riding, deal with it and get back on the bike, dude. Don't mean to sound like an a$$, but that's just the way I was brought up.

If you can not shake the fear then you should not be on the road. Everyone needs to ride defensively and be prepared for the unexpected. You can not do that if you are scared. Only you can answer if you can ride with a clear head and should ride.

You were either meant to ride or you weren't. There are soccer moms on cell phones driving Ford Excursions everywhere in this country. Everytime you roll out into the street you are at risk of being in an accident that is completely out of your control, that's just part of riding a bike. I personally wouldn't let one incident stop me, but you have to make that choice on your own.

Climb back on the steel horse, cowboy. If anything, it probably made you a better rider because you'll be more aware of your surroundings from now on.

Look at it this way... at least you were savvy-enough to be watching for issues and anticipated the situation properly, and thus avoided becoming a statistic. That should tell you that you have what it takes. Now it's just whether you enjoy riding enough to risk it again? It can happen in a car, on a bike, walking down the street, etc... stupid is as stupid does. I had a lady almost take me out at lunch yesterday in a shopping center parking lot - she had a stop sign and I didn't, but she blew through it and ran directly in front of me. Fortunately I, like you, anticipated it and took evasive actions to prevent it. I threw her several revs and she didn't even look my way... of course, she was on her cell phone!

Don't overreact or over-think it.

I would say, write it off as an experience, climb back on, and enjoy life.
You say your happy it wasn't your Fatboy, why?
If you had been on the Fatty you might not have been going as fast and been to the same spot a minute later.
But then what about thedump truck that came 60 seconds later?

You can't live your life on what if's, ya gotta take it as it comes. So I say have fun with it while you can cause after your dead your going to have a loooooong time to regret not having done so.

If you give it up, you will just regret it. You were not lucky, you were AWARE and didn't get seriously hurt which probably means you are a lot better rider than you think or a lot of others out there.

It's often said, it's risk management. If your nerve is shattered a little, avoid times and situations when you can. Don't ride at rush hours if you can help it because every cager is in a hurry and on the phone.
Don't ride after 2AM when all the drunks are out there. I stay out of the city as much as possible because their are so many more cagers fighting for the next lane. They don't see you or don't care.

And on a side note, I hate roundabouts. May work in Europe but no one has a clue here.

Ride Again, Ride Safe, and stay Aware

It could have happend while you walk across the road. Are you also going to give up walking? You have to manage fear and not let it manage you.
