In the HD "Enthusiast" Magazine that just came out (I got mine two days ago in the mail), there is a letter to the editor asking about changing to HD brand SYN3 oil. The editor responded that SYN3 is the only synthetic that will not void the factory warranty. This is an official MOCO publication.
There are countless threads on this forum about the different synthetics, and while there are lots of opinions about which one is best, almost everyone agrees that any of the quality aftermarket brands (Mobil 1, Amsoil, Royal Purple, Red Line etc.) are better and cheaper than SYN3.
It has also been explained many times on this forum that per the Magnussen-Moss Act, amotor vehicle company or dealer has to prove thatan aftermarket product caused afailurebefore the company can refuse warranty coverage. In this case, most of these oils are extremely high-quality. They aren't breaking things, they're making them last longer.
The bottom line is that the MOCO can't void warranties based on the use of non-HD oil unless it can prove the oil caused a failure. So it is both illegal and dishonest to print in its magazine (where thousands of readers will assume it is true) that you have to use HD brand oil or lose your warranty.
If anyone from the "Enthusiast" mag is reading this, please chime in.
Actually, read the article/letter again. It doesn't say it will void your warranty. The exact words are "SYN3 is the only synthetic motor oil that does not IMPACT your 24-month..."
Thanks for the correction. In my opinion, saying it "impacts" the warranty is even worse than saying it "voids" the warranty because many readers will be uninformed and believe they have to use HD oil (which is inferior and overpriced). By saying it will not "impact" the warranty, the editor left himself some wiggle room. If pressed, he can explain that it "impacts" the warranty if it can be proven that the oil caused the failure blah blah blah. This is intentionally misleading and pretty sleazy.

Deceptive word-play to make you believe something that is not true? Perhaps we should e-mail EnthusiastEditor@pcspeed.com(meaning everyone reading this send an e-mail), mentioning the Magnussen-Moss Act and ask how it could "impact" the warranty?
