My bike is a 2019 FXLR with a 107 engine and Stage 1 Upgrade. When I did the Stage 1 upgrade, I had the HD dealer do a dyno tune and ECM reprogram using the HD Pro Tuner. I have 20k miles on the bike. I have read that because the summers are getting hotter in the SW (regularly 120+ ambient temperature overr pavement) that the plastic OE intake manifolds can have problems as time & heat take a toll on the plastic. So, I want to replace the OE 55MM plastic manifold with the metal SE Extreme Flow 55MM Intake Manifold. TWO QUESTIONS.
1. What is your experience with replacing the OE intake manifold with the SE Extreme Flow 55MM Intake Manifold?
2. Is it necessary to reprogram the ECM since both the OE and SE manifolds are the same size if the Stage 1 reprogram & dyno tune already performed?
No need to reprogram the ecm as the aluminum intake, by itself, doesn't add much except it won't melt and shouldn't leak. If you plan on doing further stage upgrades later on, it might be worth a few extra ponies. A lot of folks go with the S&S 55mm intake:
The plastic one wont melt. Its just preference. Particularly if youre doing a proper build, you would flow the intake and heads to the cam. Rarely done by the interwebs shade trees. Piece of mind some would say. I did just cause. Its pretty easy. Bolts are a PITA. But my shadetree self was able
i am running the S&S version, i also use a dragy to see differences, they claim 3-5 hp gains...have i seen that ?
not exactly, but the dragy does show a slightly slower time to 60 and to the 1/4, what i notice...is slightly more rear wheel spin when launching.
i try to repeat the runts to a T, 1800 rpm and hard roll of the throttle. so in all, the added spin may indicate a slight power bump.
i mainly did it due to it being on sale when i looked at it, and also having temps in the 105 range
Thanks for your reply. FYI: I am not concerned about the composite manifold melting, but I am concerned that repeated heat stress can cause it to develop stress cracks and deformation that can result in air leaks. (This condition would be an expensive PITA if it caused problems while on the road.) QUESTION: I have read and seen U-Tube comments on the PITA problem with the bolts. Did you use extra long, round headed hex bolt tool? If your opinion, would this tool help with the bolt removal and replacement issue?
i would think the gaskets will break down and leak before the manifold... cars have been using plastic manifolds since the 90's, under a hood that traps heat, running for hundreds of thousands of miles.
auto intake TUBES also rubber and plastic are notorious for developing small air leaks
as for the tools, yes i did have a 6" long hex socket. loosen all, remove only right side 2 bolts, leave the left side in...the manifold flanges are slotted.
re install, even after snug, the intake will still rotate slightly up and down until the cylinder mount bracket is reattached
